NCAA Baseball Regionals Day #1

So Rice threw someone other than their best at SHSU? I know when I played Rice in 2004 Wayne showed our sub .500 team respect by throwing one of the best pitchers in the nation against us.

2004 - Rice had Humber, Neimann and Townsend. All were bonafide No. 1 pitchers. They threw Humber against you guys. They thought they would win three games, so they went at it like always (though, ended up using Neimann in game No. 4 with Ueckert in game No. 3) and as we know Neimann ended up being the best pro prospect of the bunch.

This year, they have Ojala and Berry. Both are UNDEFEATED and have sub 2.00 ERAs. Stats are a great thing when they are updated and easy to find. ;)

Pre-game and post-game, OG said that Ojala and Berry are interchangeable. This was not like LSU, who threw their No. 3 against Southern today. OG also said post game in reference to SHSU, "that was the toughest No. 4 seed in the country, so we're glad to take the win."

Just because he said it, doesn't make it true.

Re: BCU 4 Florida 1 bot 5th

Whew, that was close. BCU gave my Florida Gators a scare. Go Gators!!!!

OG is as good a straight shooter as they come in college baseball. There's a reason he's a very respected coach - by fans and media alike.

And the stats don't lie.

And SU threw its #4 @ LSU.

I guess in one way, that's trying to set one self up for winning a regional, but now your in a situation where your back is against the wall and you could use up two of your three starters just to try to get you to Sunday. That's why winning games #1 and #2 are so important.

That is the thing I am pleased with. S.U. has some pitching depth left though who ever is not familiar with S.U. team looking at the bullpen yesterday would not know.

I'm not sure if Minnesota threw their Ace yesterday.....

On the other hand, if LSU doesn't figure out Richard, SU gets in the winner bracket and the coach looks like a genius....

Minnesota did throw their ace...senior Tom Buske (9-4, 3.57 ERA). Their next two are no slouches. Seth Rosin (7-1, 4.08 ERA) and Chauncy Handran (7-3, 4.30 ERA).

Correct. Always fun to second guess after the result! SHSU threw their #4 in the second game in the SLC tournament and it paid off for the exact same reason. Kats had plenty of arms to go.

Minnesota is starting Seth Rosin their #3. He is 7-1 with a 4.08 ERA.

That's no more than the usual compliment, there's no way for that to be an accurate statement unless they had played every #4 seed that's in the tournament and clearly that's isn't the toughest bracket.

OG has been around baseball for years. He's played a lot of games against teams that made the tournament this year.

He's been making this remark since the tournament field was announced and even the Rice fans (perhaps the most knowledgeable in college baseball)and other baseball sites (i.e Boyd's World) have slotted SHSU as the best No. 4 seed this year.

One major site (trying to remember which, would have to go through numerous threads), even questioned why SHSU was a No. 4 and slotted behind Xavier of all teams - had SHSU as a No. 3 prior to the NCAAs.

I'll yield to OG...

They finished 7th in the regular season - I'm guessing that's why they were a 4th seed.

Yep, but their RPI was second or third of the No. 4 seeds. They also had better wins than most of those teams that were slightly ahead of them - including 3 of 4 against a No. 2 seed in TXST, a split with Rice, a win over Baylor, two-game sweep of Houston, three-game sweep of Creighton. I think we were a No. 4 because of our location and which regional we got slotted to.

Either way, to be the best, you got to beat the best. We lost to Rice, now we got Xavier. That's where the focus is on. In 2007, we came out of the loser's bracket to reach the championship game - eliminating Troy and Southern Miss along the way. I like our matchup against the Musketeers today.

If that's what it takes to stroke your ego fine, but my point still stands. Unless he's played every #4 seed that's in the tournament that's no more than the usual politeness given by coaches.

Yep, but their RPI was second or third of the No. 4 seeds.

Does RPI play that much into NCAA seeding for baseball (I really never paid any attention to the RPI)? Then with the above statement -- why would that make them anythin less than a four if other teams had a higher RPI?

If they hadn't won their tourny -- it seems to me they would'nt have made it as an at large simply because they are at a regional of a national seed.
