Mathieu Leaves AD Post at DCPS
He Held Job for Less Than 10 Months

By Alan Goldenbach
Washington Post Staff Writer
Thursday, May 21, 2009

Troy Mathieu announced he will step down as athletic director of D.C. Public Schools at the end of next week after less than 10 months on the job.

Mathieu said he has agreed to take over as athletic director of the Grand Prairie (Tex.) Independent School District, a 26,000-student system in suburban Dallas. When Mathieu took the DCPS job last summer, he moved here with his son, while his wife and daughter remained in Texas for this school year.

"It's a good opportunity, not only from a professional standpoint, but also personally," Mathieu said. "I had to weigh a ton of factors."

Mathieu's hiring last summer was heralded by many involved in D.C. scholastic athletics as a break from the past, as he was the first athletic director hired from outside the Washington area in more than three decades. Prior to his arrival in the District, Mathieu was athletic director at Grambling State University, following a nine-year stint supervising athletics in the Dallas Independent School District, which has three times as many students as DCPS.

Mathieu's replacement will inherit an intimidating set of tasks that have long plagued DCPS athletics. The athletic office employs five full-time staffers to oversee the operations of interscholastic sports in grades 4-12 at more than 140 schools citywide.

"The level of dysfunction is so mountainous," said one DCPS athletic director, "there's no way Troy could've cleaned it up."

anyone who is familiar with Texas athletics knows that they are serious about their programs and they will do what it takes to get on top.....I won't go into specifics about the move except to say that gig is better than most college jobs as the facilities are already there and they put up the money

Not trying to be funny but I sorta thought he wouldn't last long there. If one thought people of color in the south were backwardly special, those people in that region are on a different level of dumb stupidity albeit it's non-necessary as a majority of their failures are due to politics and cliquish egos. :| Smart folx who have the capabilities (resources) to have successes but their egos and their political almost cliquish type natures prevents them from succeeding as a unit. As an "outsider," I knew Troy would catch hell. It's the same type thing Mr Brewer went through w/ the LAUSD. History doesn't lie. I lol'd when the article mentioned "dysfunctional." lol Duhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.... that was a given. :emlaugh:

What Troy inherits @ GPISD is going to be remarkable. They're not broke and they (the entire community) supports their school system. IMO, it's much, much better than ANY college gig he could've sought. :read:

I wonder how much allegiance he'll show his former employer, Grambling, when it comes to helping direct kids to college to further their academic and athletic careers? :swink: lol I'll bet you a dime to a dollar it'll be ----> none, but ut-austin, aTm, et al local FBSers will again gain top priority even over his beloved mcneese. :)

I take it that he will not be challenged in this job, but those jobs that required a lot of rebuilding, he did not perform well. :)

Athletes or student-athletes usa. Those are quality kids from a very qualified school system academically and athletically. You are what you recruit. :read:

:wavey: Hope you understand what I'm implying. :swink: lol

I'm sure he quickly found out w/ respect to Grambling and the DCUSS as well. :) I'd love to hear his thoughts on both. :swink:

That's not the only area that has good kids, if you live in a box you will die in a box!:D

If I was the selecting official, I would have some serious questions if he applied for my position. :)

I only had those positions that were at rock bottom and made them into striving programs. Nothing like a real challenge. :)

He did a great job at GSU but i guess couldn't handle the pressure ! The A D job is very demanding at GSU, a yellow boy can't handle it, He seems to be the type that has to have everything laid out, some peeps are like that!

You're right, my entire home state has good kids who are great student-athletes (most times lol). :swink:

Marinate. Marinate very, very hard. :read: You know what I'm implying, eh? :bday:

MD, I've seen first-hand the illiteracy lol @ the lead positions in the greater DC area. That was over before it had an opportunity to start. They didn't get in that position overnight and it took years, if not decades, for it to hit rock bottom the way it has. :( I won't comment about Grambling because the media has done a superiorly thorough job  lol of documenting quite a few of their woes. Even their own, Mr Doug Williams, has publicly chided them and where they stand. :smh:

GSU doesn't just recruit in one area(Texas)! Like i said earlier if you live in a box you will die in a box! There is a bigger world outside of Texas bruh!:D

Troy should've ran from the opportunity to become AD @ Grambling shoudn't he? :emlaugh:

I can only imagine. It's really a small world you know... :read:

Bruh it's like a waste of time discussing something with P about Grambling.... He still has not gotten over football season and we are headed into a NEW SEASON soon....

This is about Troy who hasn't work for Grambling in how long... So who give a fucc about what he might do for us....

Dude, do something productive and help rear that 1.2 trillion $$$$ your school needs in order to maintain the past status quo because all I've witnessed from those of your ilk is a bunch of empty words like that wagon that has nothing in it. I'm not talking about your athletic programme, Deriso and the rest of the NLa media does a thorough job of that. I've only repeated what they've stated so if you're upset, get upset w/ them.

I won't get into a pissing match w/ you about current because it would be like a grown man speaking w/ an enfant, in a specific way. :D lol BTW, we @ PV are broke and we've acknowledged that we've been broke & destitute a looooooooooooooooooong time ~snicker~. We're so damned broke until I don't know how or why in sans hell we're about to erect that multi-million $ deal on campus (complex). There are times I almost wish the recession would hit a 6th gear to really separate the haves from the have nots. :swink: lol

The playing field is levelling off ridiculously nicely isn't it usa? :emlaugh: :bawling: :emlaugh: *your school name carries zero weight in our tight circle over here or up there :emlaugh: sorry. it gets zero respect from this way :wavey: *

LOL, i feel ya! I just have to remind him where he is, ***** must think he's in another dimension, talking like PV is the HBCU sports mecca!

:lmao::lmao:

Y'all pissed cause you know I'm going to speak w/ Troy and @ some point I'll inquire what his honest thoughts are (were) on the Grambling job huh?

:emlaugh:

Like I said earlier, Troy should've ran from that job. It's just certain type(s) of folx (entities) you wouldn't want to associate yourself w/. :read:
