SU band still influencing the band world

How do y'all know what band did what first??? My high school band did that Thriller routine before Michael Jackson did it. He copied it from them. [darts out]

I didn't know SU was the first marching band to do the thriller routine! Congrats!

Ditto. I remember it was released on Friday Night Videos (may have been a special edition of it) and within a few weeks my high school was blowin it in a Christmas Parade in Natchez, MS getting natural house. When we got to that breakdown, we stopped and broke it down.. lol

Peace..

Rob,you know your high school didn't even have a band!!!
Da hell you preach. My high school was founded in 300 B.C. Band was called the Marching Jukebox, and the director was named Maximus Aurelius Greggs. Real black dude.

Whole lotta stuff been copied from my high school, son. :lmao:

If you saw SU's show back then you would know OU did the same exact dance routine in the same exact order.

Some folk too dayum caught in their years to ever give what ever band or "edition" props..

SU did this EXACT same routine in the on national TV "TNT" my crab year... But it is fun/funny as hell watching some folks get upset over this....lol Even funnier watching folk not know SU even did this on a national stage.. Oh well...

:)

I sure was ignorant of Southern doing this EXACT same routine for a national audience, but I'm just as sure that I am not jealous. Kudos to the Jukebox.

My bad... Robber added the word "first" in his reply and you didn't say anything about being the first.

The anniversary of Thriller just happened last year. So, that is probably what triggered it for OU.

With the age of band boards and YouTube, there are a tone of white and black high schools and colleges completely copying, especially certain popular HBCU college bands. Example, there really is no variety in bands these days, because they are all watching YouTube and band sites and writing the same arrangements, almost direct copies, and performing a lot of the same show presentations. Then, they turn around and debate who playes it better or who played it first when it is a 10 - 25 year old song. smh

No matter where I go, high school games, HBCU games, and now PWU school games or TV broadcast, I'm hearing the same songs, especially old school songs. Example, LSU and Penn State blowing Neck now.

It is the one thing that bores me about bands these days - very little creativity and practically no distinction between bands and their personalities since all are copying one of two or three HBCUs. That is all about leadership, though leadership can be influenced by the members, as we did a bunch in the 80s. Though we didn't get all that we wanted. We suggested enough good ideas until a lot of it was eventually implemented into the show and the song selection.

Oh well... It is what it is...

Peace...

That would be quite silly to think 95 or 96 were the first bands to ever play Thriller.... But most folk tend to follow the smack with out even seeing if the smack is even relevent....lol example: DR. GSUAKA93 ...lol

It was pretty much the same with us, we pushed a lot of ideas but I think many more of yalls got by because you all had a more energetic Doc and a guy like Roy that seemed not care what Doc had to say...lol

We had a Doc that felt like he proved everything and had no one the would go over him or make him change his mind atleast "some" of the time...

But like you, I get tired of seeing people mimick other programs... I enjoy creativity that's well executed...

I will assure that Doc never changed. Getting things approved was a time consuming effort. You had to have a relentless passion that never went beyond respect for his authority while standing strong for your beliefs. I recall one time when I was a CRAB ('84) the upper-classmen were insisting that we needed to play Torture. Well, Doc hires assistance that he has a hell of a lot of confidence in, certainly more than students are trying to earn a degree to have a profession later in life. So, if they don't agree your passion and great idea sits on the table. Well, game two, TxSU crunk that on us almost immediately in the 5th Quarter. Doc lean over and asked as they blew it, "What is that?!". Darn near the entire band yelled, "Torture Doc!". He nodded recognizing he should have listened and point to Mr. Baskin and said "Write It!". Everybody else caught hell when we blew it on them.. :-)

Occassions like that gains those who were proven right some more cred when you bring another idea to him. If one doesn't get natural house or doesn't go over well, you ruin it for practically everyone with a good idea after that.

So, it was all about being very selective about what you suggest and being persistant until he finally says give it shot. For example the song that we played against FAMU in 1986. There were two sax players constantly in Doc ear about doing a drill to that since early September. He finally gave in and had Mr. Johnson write it during our week off before we played FAMU and became our featured song for the L drill. Persistant will good ideas and have energy when you sell it over and over. :-) People became less and less patient over the years. So, less and less idea from the band members got through to the field and stands.

Peace...

We had that happen several of times during my time.. We would suggest to Mr. J or Knighten to write a particular song and when the ONE song that sounded pretty good fromthe opposing band makes it across the field, they would ask "What's that"... We tell them and they like... "Oh yeah, yall told us about that one"....lol But as far as being persistant.. that we were.. You would only understand if you were around during those times... We got any more persistant with "HIS BAND"... and some of our arses would have been ZIPPED!!.....lol We had a helleva ideas that I still feel to this day would have housed out.... I don't trip too much because overall I still can say I marched in the "best"....
Prime example was in 97' when we PREACHED to DOC we needed to be playing "Call Tyrone"... Matter of fact I want to say Knighten started on it, and brought it up and DOC said "NO"....He had his own plans... And we all know what's the most memorable song from that faithful night in 97...lol GSU playing "Call Tyrone".... I swear he felt like the entire DOME was BLOWING at us... I was like "Dayum this is what it feels like to get blown on by about 20 SU bands"....lol That was some scary isht... I thought the whole city of New Orleans turned on us that night...smh

OMG@this thread. LOLOL. I've been overlooking this. LOL. AH Robber... the SUers are right... Didn't you know SU taught Michael Jackson the dance.
