So are you telling me she is better or has a brighter future because she can "pivot and dunk"? Candace Parker won a national championship in high school and college and was this years WNBA player or the year AND rookie of the year. Griner aint won NAN championship....

First of all, Griner is in her 3rd complete year of playing high school basketball. She only made the FRESHMAN team as a 9th grader. Griner goes to a school where there is absolutely NO female basketball talent. This kid was 10 for 11 in the championship game even do she was double and triple teamed all night long by a team who has a RICH TRADITION for girls basketball in the state.

If I could compare how this kid is going to change the game, I would make it equal to that of SHAQ when he was in college. Shaq didn't win a high school championship or a college championship, but he is still the best big man in recent history to play the game. That will be the case for Griner.

People know who Griner is because of youtube. As someone said earlier, CP did not have youtube when she was in high school. Heck even Scholastic Sports America had gone off the air by then LOL.

Shaq did not revolutionze the game in my opinion as if you noticed, there hasn't been an abundance of 7-0 monsters following his footsteps.... if Oliver Miller, who was similar in size, turned out to be something then maybe but Shaq was a unique individual that will pass through the NBA similar to how Griner will just pass through college as there aren't many 6-8 girls out there

Shaq was a powerful force but Mourning, Moutumbo, etc. all came out around the same time so the center position was pretty strong

Dahill...although, important....ain't got nothing to do with stats, per say. Im speaking purely on taking women's basketball to another level. And, in-game dunking, esp from the low post, is one of the PRIME 'wants' for the game of women's basketball.

CP has great game and can dunk. But, she's still at the point where everything, basically, has to be in-line for her to dunk in a game. As good as CP is, that ain't going to convert the game from the ground to the air.

And, that's what the women's game has been sorely missing. AIR.

Griner is dunking. Head start...no head start...alone...on people...rebounding in the lane and pivoting with one motion and dunking. She's clearly going to raise the bar...and, she's started with the HS playoffs in Austin.

Now, with what you know about basketball fans and the general viewing public...you don't think Griner has a chance to have more of an influence on the game of women's basketball than CP?




Speaking of those HS championships....the loss in the championship game was no fault of her own. When you have that big'a talent on your team and get that deep into the playoffs...coaching and your help are supposed to pick up the slack. And, it never materialized.

WRONG. Shaq's team in high school went 68-1 in two years (the one game they lost was because he missed free throws at the end) and he won a state title. In college his team was arguably the most talented in the Nation but Dale Brown was a horrible coach but he did win National Player of the year. I don't think Griner will win any accolades in college.

If people didn't know Parker in high school then please tell me why was she the ONLY girl ever to have her signing day televised LIVE on ESPN? Where was ESPN when Griner signed?

People pay attention to Griner because she can dunk with ease but come on man. She don't have 1/3 of the tools that CP3 has. It's not even fair to CP3 or Griner to compare.

Great post. Mind you, that she lost to a STORIED program, not just a team. Summit is like the Lakers of girls basketball in Texas. The 1999 team was honored at halftime of their game to celebrate the 10th year reunion of their championship, which included 4 straight 5A titles (1999, 2000, 2001, 2002) and have made it to the Final Four 3 years since 2002.

Griner had no help. Had she had any help, they would have EASILY beat Summit.

Griner will bring more to women college basketball than CP IMO.

don't Mansfield come out of Region I against teams from El Paso, etc....hell...now I can see how they are so dominant...cakewalk games while Region III and II got to slug it out every week

Some Region II teams travel to Dallas from Houston and vice versa to battle each other while the FW area teams play El Paso :emlaugh:

Now, they come out against Duncanville, Desoto (until this year), Arlington Bowie, Timberview, Cedar Hill!!! All these schools have won it all since the turn of the century. In fact, only two schools have won outside of region 1 in the past 15 years (last year CyFair and two years ago Rockwall).

regardless.....Region I is a cakewalk once you get through the top 5 or so teams....if you stack the best talent in one area it's not hard to win consistently in girls basketball...glad you can experience it

but dallas (area) athletics and houston (area) athletics are ran totally different as Dallas schools invest more in facilities and coaches while Houston schools prefer "equality" as if one school does not have it...none will

by getting to know the top dog in DISD athletics, Dallas area districts will always play at a higher level as they do whatever it takes for the kids to compete at a high level from the suburbs to the hood schools

every suburban district damn near has indoor facilities, etc. for football.....girls basketball out there is played more for whatever reason, etc...

but I think also since dallas is more of a national hub for people all over the united states to settle in you get a different breed of individual moving in as opposed to Houston where it's more regionalized in terms of people moving in..............

like a promoter once told me...Dallas is a cut throat city.....what works in Houston won't work in Dallas.....competition is more fierce in Dallas

This is very, very true. I used to really hate on this area regarding athletics until I got caught up into the type of work ethic I've seen these kids have + the backing (family,friends, and even communities) these people give. All that together spells nothing but success for teams in this area. NTx will forever rule the state championships based upon that alone, unless.....:read: "mojo" comes back to life lol or <b>Lufkin/Longview-Tyler related</b> get that "crop" they historically and traditionally groomed together since 1st grade. :read:

the suburban cities in Dallas are more developed than Houston so they're more aggressive in planning....Sugar Land is probably the closest rival to a Plano, Allen, Frisco, etc. in terms of development but they don't have their own school system...while Katy, Pearland, etc. are developed but they lack the "town" feel as they grew so fast and split up the school system while Dallas suburbs mover much slower in breaking areas up

ala Richardson, Garland, Mesquite, <b>Southlake lol</b>, Grapevine, HEB, etc etc. They don't add. They just reload. lol I didn't comment too much on Plano because they've split their thing up several upon several times lately (w/in the last 20 or so years).

The thing that somewhat amazes me about the Houston area is the # of small towns lufkin-like :read: where historical power resides BUT demographics has changed those areas as well. THOSE towns historically dominated. But again, demographics changed them. The greater dfw area hasn't seen anything that comes close to that outside of the Waxahachie's, Corsicana's, Dentons (every now and then), and Ennis's. :read: Nothing rivals those outer areas of Houston IMO.

I won't get into the golden triangle area. lol I'm still trying to figure that out. :emlaugh:

I wonder what the Houston and Dallas "new school" numbers look like for the last 10-15 years. I know here in Houston...since 94 or so, there have been ALOT of new schools pop'n up in each district. Since then, FBend, alone, has opened 6 or 7 new HS's (heck, might even be 8 or 9 by now, knowing FB). You still have HISD, Katy, Alief, the Kleins, the Cy's, Pearland and others with 2 or more new schools since then.

What rate is Dallas going up there? Cuz, it's re-got'da*n-diculous out here.

DISd has only added 1 new high school (Conrad) but the growth is at the far northern sector such as Rockwall, Mckinney, Carrolton, Lewisville, etc....

I remember when we were amazed at the jumbotron and field turf at North Shore's stadium in 2002 but Dallas schools had that long time ago.....when we get a chance to make a statement in Houston (Fort bend specifically), those fools install astroturf and build the same exact stadium like the older one

Areas south of Dallas tend to build mega high schools and not split up the talent but areas south of Arlington such as Mansfield split up

Like tbf said Blade, slow to change this way man. I've noticed almost 8 new 5A HSs in place where there used to be only one in certain areas around Houston whereas here, they're not doing that unless it's in those northern sectors.

Talent is (was) being split up at an astronomical rate in the greater Houston area (ala Willowridge is a prime example) whereas here, it's not happening.

New schools don't SPLIT talent, it simply ADDS talent. Mansfield is the perfect example. When Mansfield was a one high school town, they won state 4 years in a row in girls basketball in the 5A division. Since 2002, Mansfield now has FOUR high school, and this year they had TWO teams in the finals.

Districts like DUNCANVILLE should learn from this.

On the 16K, there were 8K there on Friday night and 8K there on Saturday night.

8K to see a girls basketball game is very impressive. The sport really doesn't reach outside of the typical fan base of parents, students and a couple of friends.
