Wheatley Vs Yats - Houston ISD B-Ball

my issue is blacks had things good ironically then before we started running all over the place and getting screwed at the end...Once alot of familes graduated form college and could leave the wards, south park etc....most of them on my sid eof town settled in Missouri City and all went to Willowridge....

we had that thing rolling as the HISD schools hated us and the other schools realized it wasn't fair in some cases.....A small group of us let Fort bend ISD talk them into rezoning Willowridge in the 90s in return for their own school (Marshall) which half those parents never had kids to attend there........

that turned into a disaster as blacks at Willowridge who would've made it got sent to schools in Fort bend that did not care about them whatsoever and our enrollment dropped nearly 1,000 kids in 10 years...even Marshall's has dropped as we're now both 4A schools

now, the blacks are running to Hightower and that's going to be Willowridge South (it's already is) especially now since Sienna Plantation is getting their own school next year.....where will we run then when the whites leave?

Pearland's Dawson High is Worthing South as it was built for the black folks to stay away from pearland High....it's a straight shot off of Cullen and will get their fair share of HISD rejects enrolling...

my dad's spot is near galena park's old Fidelity High....Shirley Walker's husband, Lonnie Walker at Alcorn State, played there along Gillard, the PV track coach...most of those blacks who went there moved towards North Shore and created that monopoly out there along with Pleasantville folks

MC Williams and Carver are in Acres Homes and Greg Lincoln was in 4th ward when it used to look like 4th ward :emlaugh:

If you lived out on 290 you went to carverdale off of gessner

but as funny as it sounds, Madison, Sterling, etc. were built for whites but we took over which eventually moved them to Pearland only to see us follow

Re: Wheatley Vs Yates - Houston ISD B-Ball

I have a co-worker in the Department of Health and Kinesiology at Texas Southern University, Dr. Robins that graduated from Jack Yates (Southern University and the University of Houston) that stated the rivalry on the gridiron dates back to 1926 between Wheatley and Yates. He is currently writing a historical book (timeline) about the rivalry (1926- late 1960’s). According to Dr. Robins several newspaper articles stated that it was the largest high school football game in the country based on attendance (30K~35K) on Thanksgiving Day.

Dr. Robins also stated that the game was played where the current University of Houston's football stadium is located (HISD Field). Unfortunately, in our efforts to fight segregation policies with a integration platform, leading to desegregation policies or what I believe The Band Fan is alluding too assimilation identification we ultimately lost a great deal more with the overall health and stability of our communities. Based on the UIL rules for the start date of the playoffs, eventually the match-up between Wheatley vs. Yates and the community created a vacuum that forced a lost of a financially successful event because of having to move the date the game would be played.

Sound familiar?

Re: Wheatley Vs Yates - Houston ISD B-Ball

does it? black folks in some cases are like robots...we program certain dates for life.....homecoming, classics, etc.....you move a successful event and watch what happens.....

they hand out scholarships at Strake.....but they claim it's on a "blind" policy meaning the donors don't know if the kid is a "player" or not....

if you field a team with kids of Yates, Booker, T. Wheatley, TSU, PV alums, you would win every national title for the rest of the century

Oh, really?...

Well...they must be the blind with a blind policy. Cuz, Ive been knowing of recruiters taking their blind arses to MCMS back in the day.

There was a documentary about Yates High school that aired on tv in Houston about 5- 6 years ago that went into the history of that game. I had it on tape for a minute. It was played at Jeppesen Field which I guess became Robertson Stadium. It talked about how big an event it was and how both schools tried to upstage the other. In one game, Wheatley changed uniforms at halftime and in another, Ms. Yates landed on the 50 yd line in a helicopter. It was a cool documentary.

I also read a book when I was in grad school called "Black Dixie". It was primarily about Black houston and how it was different from any other city in the nation in that the Black population was not centered in one area. The city basically had three areas where blacks where deep...and how Colored High (Booker T), Yates, and Wheatley all anchored these areas....and race relations in Houston were relatively far better than in other southern cities. Thats a whole other conversation though.

My mother in law talked about that game. The Wheatley Queen came in a Rolls Royce. The Yates side was devastated as they new they had lost this battle until they heard the noise of the Helo.
