The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff band has been invited to march in the inaugural parade when Barack Obama is sworn in as president.

The band has to act fast to raise funds to finance the trip.

The 250-member Marching Musical Machine of the Mid-South received word Wednesday that the historically black university's application was accepted for the January 20th inauguration.

Band director John Graham Jr. says UAPB applied in January 2008 to take part, well before voters elected the nation's first black president in November.

UAPB Chancellor Lawrence Davis says it will be important for students and the university itself to have a presence at Obama's inauguration.

Davis says the university will have to raise money to pay for the visit to the nation's capital. The amount needed hadn't been determined Wednesday.

The band at Siloam Springs High School has also been told it is invited participate in the inauguration. Members of the Little Rock Nine, the black students who integrated Little Rock Central High School in 1957, have been invited as well.

More than 1,300 groups, including several from Arkansas, applied to participate in the parade.

Yes, congrats to all 6 HBCU bands:

1. University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff's (UAPB's) Marching Musical Machine of the Mid-South (better known as M4)
2. Florida A&M University's Marching 100
3. Hampton University's The Force Marching Band
4. Grambling State University's World Famed Tiger Marching Band
5. Delaware State University's Approaching Storm
6. Howard University's Showetime Marching Band)

UAPB's M4, along with their Golden Girls, are also the halftime entertainment for this year's DMCBAA/Dallas Mavericks Black College Alumni Night (February 7, 2009) as the Dallas Maverick will host the Chicago Bulls. A portion of the cost of the tickets sold as Black College Night tickets will support scholarships for DFW Metroplex students attending HBCUs.

A proud supporter of ALL HBCUs,
