SWAC Championship Game Attendance

My vote is Houston. Say what you want but people will come since there is much more to do here then any other city within the SWAC.

When I played in the SWAC baseball tourney for J-State a few years ago, Houston was a great city. The hotels were nice, the people were nice and the town seemed to have a lot offer with the entertainment value. I would not have any problem if the game was move there.

To attempt to maximize attendance for the SCG, Shreveport and Jackson are the ONLY cities that will work.

All of this BS about things to do in a city is just that...BS. The only people who take the time to even go (or consider going) to the SCG (this late in the year) are true fans. All of this talk about traveling to a city just to go shopping doesn't help the SCG. So stop it. It is a moot point.

Another moot point. As a player you would have played wherever the game was scheduled. This has nothing to do with the people who attend the games.

it's not the location.....let's be real....the average joe in the Birmingham area has to come out...if you can get 20K fans from the city consistently along with 20K from both schools things change...

where are these fans who knows....you drive in neighborhoods right by Legion Field and no one is walking the street

but like most SWAC schools.....each city seems to only embrace one game while the other suffers....

Birmimgham natives are tied to the Magic City Classic

Dallas is tied to the State Fair Classic

Jackson fans seem to only come out for SU in droves

Houston - if SU comes to town and play TSU in late November or a Bayou Classic type game

All the more reason why you put the game in Shreveport or Jackson to provide a more central location to the SWAC base.

Plain and simple. If this game were held in either Jackson or Shreveport you've got 40K people...easy.

I can't agree with you on that one Soggy, but the bottomline is people need to support their school.

If they have to have a game near their location to come the truth of the matter is, they're simply sorry azz fans.

Personally I think they should rotate the game every year. One year at a Westeren Division School site, th next at an Easteren Division school site.

The SWAC office has been really narrow minded in this area and as a result they've been screwing Westeren Division fans for a decade.

As a recent Fall 2008 Marketing Grad from Southern, I see numerous aspects of this game that needs improvement. The marketing for the game must be intensified, the only time I saw or heard any advertisement for the game was @ the Bayou Classic.

The SWAC office should re-evaluate its Promotional Strategy

Who is the Target Market: SWAC Alumnus or general HBCU fans…

Location: Is the current location satisfying the target market?

etc…

I agree 100 percent.

I agree that people need to support their schools, but at what cost? My argument is the expense factor or the (financial bottomline) that the people in the SWAC office need to consider.

I know this is going to sound as an excuse for the Gram folks (as we have made this argument before) and yet people want to dismiss it. But I will present it again.

Of all of the member schools in the SWAC, the Grambling, Miss Valley and Alcorn campuses sit in least populated areas. Now I will not try to speak for the people at Valley or Alcorn, but if you simply look at the profiles of most of the GSU people who post on this forum, you will see that they do not live anywhere near Grambling. And we are not here in small numbers either. There are quite a few of us that post on here.

My point to all of this is that no matter where Grambling plays on any given week (be it at home or on the road) it is going to result in road trip for most of us. Many of the rest of you have the luxury to simply leave home a couple hours before the game and then to be back home a couple of hours after. That is not the case for me nor the rest of the GSU folks with GSU home games.

Financially speaking, those road trips (over the course of a football season) add up. So believe me, there are some diehard fans who want to support their schools, but have to consider the cost involved.

If the SCG is played in either Shreveport or Jackson (areas that are more central to the SWAC markets) you increase the chance of some fans (who either went to the schools playing in the SCG or not) willing to do a turnaround on a 3 or 4 hour trip.

That is all I am saying. True fans who want to support their school or even the SWAC are willing to do this.

Actually that does matter. Why do you think the Super Bowl is held in certain locations?

Uhhh....there are a number of reasons, but the players of the teams involved will play wherever it is held. They have no choice in the matter.

This is so cute. But there are budget limits. And to be honest, this is not a marketing issue.

it was too darn cold,
the game was too late in the year and
bham sucks....
therefore the "extra" fans are not going to attend.

its a shame we have to wait until school is out and wait until the christmas holidays to play a scg. luckily gas was 1.49 in jackson otherwise the attendance would have been 18k lol

Right on the money.

But you see, bowl games are not about the students. That argument is moot.

But if students and fans dont show up skools lose money!:noidea:

Again, this is not about students. This discussion is about ways to increase overall fan attendance. There is NOTHING that can be done about when this game is played considering that the regular season ends in November.

And with that said...a big  to DCG who I am told was at the game, didn't attend either school involved and lives in Houston.

Clearly, it is! So you expect people to show up just because its the SCG. No Pub at all. The SCG itself isn't branded well enough for that to happen... This game should be one where there are numerous fans from all the SWAC schools and to do that it must be marketed and branded as such.

I have been saying that for years. A centralized location is the key.

That is not my argument.

Your argument is: Ways to increase overall fan attendance.

My opinion/solution: Developing the SCG into a strong brand.

For instance:
Superbowl: Not just attended by fans of the opposing teams; but attended by NFL fans because of its brand "its the Superbowl"

Bayou Classic: 200,000 fans takeover New Orleans, this brand is known all over BCF... People attend because its the "Bayou Classic"

The SWAC office, for what I have seen, won't be able to do this at the rate for which they are going. The Budget isn't the problem, its continually thinking inside of the box!!!
