The Media had that wrong. The kids failed the EXIT exam...which is different than passing BOARDS. Boards is the test that counts, it is the test that Alcorn has bragged on for years. Has been about 100% since 95 I believe. Things may have changed since I graduated but it was a GREAT program then. The instructors were awesome.

NOTHING HAS CHANGED....THEY JUST THOUGHT THAT THEY WERE GONNA BREEZE THRU THE EXAM.......THIS SAME TEST HAS GIVEN FOR YEARS AND ALCORN HAD A VERRRRRRRRRRY HIGH PASSING RATE......THEY JUST DIDN'T DO WHAT THEY SHOULD HAVE DONE..........BUT THE EXAM ISN'T THE TOPIC BEING DISCUSSED..........................

that is a big statement. then you didn't have a program to begin with. no one person makes or breaks the boom. Dr. Magruder leaves, Adams, leaves Betheah leaves. he!! Liddell leaves. THE PROGRAM REMAINS. I can count a handful of schools who i would say really have consistent band programs. But you are right, alcorn really have not been the same since 99. I wish they hurry up and come back.

I am not saying the same, obviously each director has influence on the program. but no one individual should make a program. JSU may not have been the same since the 90s but it is still getting recognition, just look at the bands resume in the last 15 years. and over all it is still the force in the swac
 
Royboy you are right.

The problem with Alcorn's band is that, the success of the band hinges too much on the players to me. Yes you need good players but if those players lack motivation & direction you will see inconsistency.

Which is why Alcorn has so many up and down years. When the band is ON....mostly it is from the pride of the players, after they leave so does that luster or intensity to be great at what you do.

I know when I was there I refused to be "sorry". People around me had to atleast try or you was gonna hear it from me. Yea they called me an A55 hole for it but we were good. And I wasn't the best on the horn, it was plenty of guys better than me.

But it wasn't just me...it was other guys in other sections...super talented & great leaders...alot of us left in 99.

2000 was a solid program but every since then it hasn't regained its form.

The problem with Alcorn and Valley's bands is that all of the students in Mississippi who want to be in a black college band and are serious about it... go to Jackson State. At Alcorn and Valley it's just something to do.

you know what .... I seriously belive you... I sat beside Alcorn band when they came here..... all they were talking about is Jackson State this... Jackson State that... Im thinking like damn are they yo daddy?

Well, you must have been sitting in the middle of the the band, because I sat right on the side of the band and I didn't hear that, especially with Griff right there!!!

Sadly Noise Talka is telling the truth. But is isn't because of the reasons he believes. Some of the rumors I've heard at Alcorn is that scholarships have been cut in half.

They got a steep road to climb.
 
I cant wait for The Sounds to get back to pre2000. I remember the Alcorn 99 year they were small but bringing heat. They had about 20 trumpets and they sounded like 40 real talk. Those were good times for Alcorn, my favorite cuts were Quickie and Georgie Porgey that year. 95 when they came to Memorial and blew Jeep by R. Kelly had to be one of the loudest songs i heard lol, I was like dam they blowing the shat out of a slow ballad.

We had some who weren't serious to come to Jackson State, too.... They just didn't make it past summer band camp. :lol:
 



Alcorn has ben doing SuperSoul for the last two years... I would rather see Mr. Murray come... an Alcorn alum! Scholarships have been cut... students had to leave during band camp because there was no money left!
