Wykevin Bazemore’s stint as Shaw University’s interim men’s basketball coach didn’t last long.
The university Thursday announced that Bazemore, a former Winston-Salem and CIAA standout, would be the permanent head coach moving forward.
“I’m honored and excited to accept this opportunity,” Bazemore said in a statement. “We will honor the tradition, raise the standard, and build a culture defined by accountability, unity, relentless effort, and a championship pedigree.”
Bazemore assisted at UVA Wise and Southern Alamance High School before joining Shaw’s JV basketball staff. He replaces Bobby Collins, who resigned in February after six seasons as the Bears’ head coach.
Bazemore is one of only four CIAA men’s basketball players to earn all-conference honors in each of his four seasons at WSSU.
He led the Rams to the 2012 CIAA title as a freshman and was a four-time BOXTOROW All-American selection.
Bazemore also played professionally in Spain before returning to the states to begin his coaching career.
A formal press conference introducing Bazemore as head coach will be announced in the near future.
