Anthony McComb III’s hot hand carried Norfolk State for much of Saturday night with a team-high 23 points.
But it was Adrean Newton’s clutch layup with just nine seconds left that sealed a 66-64 comeback win over Delaware State.
Down six with two minutes to play, the Spartans roared back with an 8–2 closing burst — a stretch defined by grit, composure, and timely shot-making. McComb, nearly automatic all game, hit 7 of 8 from the field, including 3 of 4 from deep, and calmly knocked down six from the stripe to cap a dazzling performance.
Keyontae Lewis kept the offense humming with 18 points and five boards, while Elijah Jamison chipped in 16 on a sharp 6-for-9 shooting night, adding another steady hand at the line.
Delaware State didn’t go quietly. Ponce James poured in 22 points while piling up five assists and four steals, keeping the Hornets in charge for much of the matchup.
Corey Perkins and Camian Shell added 12 and 11 points respectively, helping the Hornets (5–12, 0–2 MEAC) stay step-for-step until the final possession.
With the win, Norfolk State (7–11, 1–1 MEAC) clawed back to an even mark in conference play — and found a spark that could ignite their push through the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference slate.
