Michael Vick remains optimistic amid growing pains of first year at Norfolk State

Michael Vick struck a candid and reflective tone as he nears his first season as head coach.

Vick, the first-year Norfolk State coach, was open about the growing pains of his debut campaign, noting, “It’s been in the situation that I’m in now and, you know, going through the season, but obviously looking at the future, you know, I just see all the positives,” he said to the media on Monday.

“And, you know, so thankful that I had this healthy opportunity to go out this year with my team, with my coaches, and battle each and every week. Obviously, a lot of tough losses, but learned a lot, you know, along the way.”

What was billed as a potential transformational move for the football program when Vick was hired last winter has been anything but. Norfolk is 1-10. The Spartans are currently on a MEAC-worst nine-game losing streak.

Along the way, Vick has made coaching adjustments and even called out his players for a lack of execution, penalties, and off-the-field distractions.

The Spartans rank second-to-last in total offense, are dead last in the MEAC in defense, and lead the conference in penalties.

Vick acknowledged the need for both a culture shift and on-field consistency in 2026.

“Getting up for next year, super excited, man. I understand that in any sport in life in general, it’s about consistency,” he said. And that’s what I’m searching for now—how to create an atmosphere and build a team with structure and discipline.”

He emphasized his commitment to instilling these traits while assembling a roster that reflects his competitive philosophy, one forged in college and the NFL.

“That’s how I plan to recruit and bring guys in. There’s a lot of interest right now,” he said. “The potential is there. But it’s not just about having good players, it’s about developing them and making sure they understand our game plan, are comfortable with everything we’re looking to do, and are on board with everything off and on the field.”

Facing the reality of losing 30 seniors, Vick recognized an upcoming transformation for Norfolk State. “It’s going to be an influx of players that’s probably going to come in, but coming in with the right attitude, right mindset.” He plans a transparent approach for 2026, vowing to play “a different brand of football, for sure.”

Reflecting on the year’s adversity, Vick remained introspective but optimistic. “I’ve been able to hang in there each and every week emotionally. Football is very emotional, and it takes me a while, even with a win, to get over it.”

Vick admitted that high preseason expectations ultimately did not turn into success. However, with a full offseason to actually recruit players and shape the roster, Norfolk State should be in a much stronger position to accelerate the rebuild.

“So many things to teach on, so many things to self-correct. With the influx of players we have to bring in, we can set the standard now,” he said. “I get to play the general manager role, build the team, construct it.”

Vick closed his remarks with gratitude for the journey and the relationships that had been forged.

As the Spartans turn the page, Vick’s vision for Norfolk State is clear—a program ready for the challenge of the seasons to come.
