Cam’Ron McCoy will face his former team for the first time this Saturday when Southern hosts Jackson State in a high-stakes SWAC showdown.
The junior quarterback, who transferred from Jackson State to Southern before this season, brings added intrigue and motivation to the rivalry game at A.W. Mumford Stadium.
Jaguars coach Terrence Graves acknowledged the matchup’s personal significance for McCoy, who could start on Saturday, though that has yet to be determined.
“As a competitor, you always get excited when you play against a team where you come from,” Graves said. McCoy’s transfer has added a compelling subplot as Southern (1-3) looks to snap a six-game losing streak against the reigning HBCU national champions.
McCoy, who started the season opener against North Carolina Central, has thrown for 316 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions in three games.
Facing his old team is sure to fuel McCoy’s competitive fire, but the quarterback is happy to contribute to the team.
“Coach Graves really accepted me,” McCoy told The Advocate. “Coach (Fred) McNair, I knew that I could learn a lot from him, so I wanted to step my game up and learn a lot from them.”
Said Jackson State coach T.C. Taylor about his former quarterback:
“I mean, I’m very proud of Cam’Ron, you know, able to find somewhere, a spot to land, and then also get an opportunity to play down there at Southern,” Taylor said on Monday. “Very proud and happy for the success Cam is having right now.”
