Travis Hunter, the Jacksonville Jaguars’ highly touted rookie and reigning Heisman Trophy winner, is set to make his NFL preseason debut this Saturday night against the Pittsburgh Steelers at EverBank Stadium.

The Jaguars plan to utilize Hunter as both a wide receiver and a cornerback, continuing the unprecedented two-way role he played at Colorado and Jackson State, and that the Jaguars have promised to explore at the pro level.

Head coach Liam Coen confirmed Hunter will see game time on offense and defense, joining the starters, including quarterback Trevor Lawrence, in the preseason opener.

The Jaguars have practiced Hunter in both positions multiple times this week, showcasing his athleticism, versatility, and football IQ. Although Hunter is a starting wide receiver, he is listed as a backup cornerback.

Given the challenge of playing both ways, the coaching staff plans to adjust his snap count based on the game situation and his endurance.

The Steelers are expected to rest many of their starters, giving Hunter a crucial opportunity to demonstrate his skills against a mix of veteran backups and younger players.

“It’s not hard at all.”

This preseason debut represents the first significant step in evaluating how Hunter might contribute regularly in a two-way role during the regular season, potentially redefining usage patterns for elite two-sport athletes in the NFL.

Jacksonville’s front office and coaching staff have expressed high hopes for Hunter, believing his unique talents could transform the franchise after a difficult 2024 season.

His ability to impact the game on both sides of the ball adds a layer of excitement and anticipation for Jaguars fans and football observers alike as they watch the Travis Hunter era begin.
