ATLANTA, GA – Morehouse College proudly announces that head men’s basketball coach Douglas Whittler has been chosen as one of the coaches for the 2025 Men’s HBCU All-Star Game, the school announced Monday. This prestigious event is scheduled for Sunday, April 6, 2025, at Freeman Coliseum in San Antonio, Texas, during the NCAA Final Four weekend.

Coach Whittler will co-lead Team Al Attles alongside Erik Martin, Head Men’s Basketball Coach at South Carolina State University. Team Al Attles comprises top players from the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC), Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC), and independent institutions such as Tennessee State, Hampton, and North Carolina A&T State Universities.

Expressing his gratitude, Coach Whittler stated, “It is truly an honor to be selected to coach in the HBCU All-Star Game. This event not only showcases the exceptional talent within HBCUs but also highlights the rich history and contributions of our institutions to the sport of basketball.”

Coach Whittler, a former first-team All-Conference player for Morehouse College, has been instrumental in the success of the Maroon Tigers. After serving as an assistant coach from 2009 to 2015 and as associate head coach from 2015 to 2021. Whittler helped develop 8 all-conference players, 3 newcomer of the year performers, 2 SIAC player of the year, and 3 All-Americans during his tenure as an assistant coach.

Whittler was named interim head coach for the 2021-22 season following the passing of legendary coach Grady Brewer. In his inaugural season, Whittler led the team to a 21-7 record, and a 15-2 SIAC mark, helping the Maroon and White claim its 13th conference regular-season title, securing the SIAC regular-season title and tying a school record with an 18-game winning streak. Whittler is the only Morehouse coach to win 21 games in his first season. He was named full-time head coach in March 2022. In 2022-23. Morehouse repeated as the SIAC East Division Champions. That same year, Whitler led Kerry Richardson to second-team all-conference recognition. In 2023-24, Morehouse three-peated as the East Division Regular Season Champion with another 20-victory season. In 2023-24, the Maroon Tigers Cedric Taylor III was chosen as the Freshman of the Year for the conference. In addition, the 2023-24 team earned the distinction of being the top defensive team in NCAA Division II for field goal defensive percentage. In 2024-25, the Maroon Tigers finished 2nd in the SIAC East during the regular season. In 2024-25, Cedric Taylor III was selected to the SIAC 1st Team and received the Elite 16 award from the SIAC, the highest academic award that a student-athlete can receive within the conference. Brandon Peters was also selected to the All-Freshman Team in 2024-25.

In four complete seasons leading the Maroon Tigers, Whittler has a 76-40 (.655) overall record and a 59-21 (.734) record in the SIAC. Whittler owns the second-highest winning percentage (minimum 50 games coached) in the 115 years that Morehouse has played intercollegiate basketball and has won the most games of any Morehouse coach in their first four seasons leading the Maroon Tigers.

The HBCU All-Star Game aims to celebrate the “Best in Black College Basketball,” providing a platform for outstanding HBCU student-athletes and coaches to gain national exposure. The 2025 game marks the fourth annual men’s event and introduces the inaugural women’s HBCU All-Star Game, underscoring a commitment to equality and visibility for female athletes.

Fans can watch the games live on Peacock and NBC Sports NOW, with the men’s game tipping off at 1 p.m. ET, followed by the women’s game approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of the men’s matchup.
