alcornlogo.gifA close game turned into a rout as Alcorn State opened the second half with a 20-6 run en route to an 82-61 victory on Monday night in the Davey L. Whitney Complex.

Alcorn State (5-19, 3-8 SWAC) took an early 7-0 lead but Grambling (6-16, 4-7 SWAC) stormed back and took an 18-17 advantage at the 8:14 mark after two free throws by Marcus Coleman. Alcorn State regained the lead several seconds later and pushed its margin up to 22-18 but Grambling answered with a 7-3 run to tie the contest at 25-all with 4:46 left on the clock.

Grambling took its second lead (28-27) of the half after an Ariece Perkins three-pointer and outscored ASU 9-3 over the next few minutes to claim a 34-30 advantage at the 2:02 mark. However, the lead was brief as ASU closed out the half strong with a 7-0 run for a 37-34 halftime margin.

The second was all ASU as the Braves dropped a barrage of three-pointers during a 20-6 run that concluded with them claiming a 57-40 lead with 13:49 left. Grambling never recovered from the run as the closest they would get was a 16-point margin with 8:44 left in the game.

Perkins led Grambling State with 17 points and five rebounds in 31 minutes of action. Alcorn State was led by Troy Jackson’s 21 points.
