The Jackson State women’s basketball team played stifling defense in a hard-fought 67-58 quarterfinals win over Prairie View at the 2024 Southwestern Athletic Conference Basketball Tournament on Wednesday.

Jackson State (24-6) had three players score in double figures, led by Keshuna Luckett, who had 19 points. Miya Crump added 17 points, eight rebounds, and two steals. Andriana Avent chipped in with 11 points off the bench.

Jackson State out-rebounded Prairie View A&M 38-34 in Wednesday’s game, paced by Crump’s eight boards. The Tigers also collected 11 offensive rebounds and scored 10 second-chance points.

Jackson State’s defense held Prairie View A&M to only 29.5 percent shooting from the field. The Tigers also limited Ryann Payne to 6-of-20 shooting in the game.

Jackson State (24-6) fell behind 15-7 to open the matchup but followed up with a 5-0 run with 2:24 left in the first quarter to narrow its deficit to 15-12. Prairie View A&M answered back and added to its lead, leaving the Tigers down 17-12 entering the second quarter.

Prairie View kept adding to that lead, building a 25-19 advantage before Jackson State went on a 12-0 run, highlighted by a bucket from Avent, to take a 31-25 lead.

The Tigers proceeded to tack on three points to that lead and enjoyed a 37-28 advantage heading into halftime. Jackson State dominated in the paint, scoring 14 of its 25 points close to the basket.

After the half, Jackson State held on to its advantage and owned a 49-44 lead heading into the fourth quarter. JSU’s bench made the most of its minutes in the period, as non-starters totaled four of the team’s 12 third-quarter points.

The Tigers kept its lead intact before going on a 6-0 run to grow the lead to 67-56 with 18 seconds to go in the contest. The Panthers narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Tigers still cruised the rest of the way for the win.
