Miya Crump notched a double-double with 23 points and 10 rebounds to help the Jackson State women’s basketball team defeat Texas Southern 101-51 on the road Saturday afternoon.

In addition to Crump’s strong showing, the Tigers (20-6, 15-0) were led by Angel Jackson, who had 10 points and four blocks, and by Andriana Avent, who added 19 points coming off the bench.

The Jackson State offense was very productive from beyond the arc, knocking down eight threes on 21 attempts. Avent was the most prolific shooter for the Tigers, draining three treys in the contest.

Jackson State’s defense held Texas Southern to only 24.6 percent shooting from the field, including 25.8 percent from beyond the arc. The Tigers also limited Nya Harmon to 1-of-15 shooting and five points in the game.

After falling behind 7-2, Jackson State (20-6, 15-0 SWAC) went on an 11-0 run with 7:24 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Laila Walker, to take a 13-7 lead.

The Tigers then added four points to that lead by the end of the period and entered the quarter break with a 22-12 advantage.

Jackson State got a great contribution from its bench in the period, as non-starters accounted for eight of its 22 total points.

JSU built that first-quarter lead to 25-14 before going on a 9-0 run starting at the 8:09 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Ti’Ian Boler, to increase its lead to 34-14.

The Jackson State Tigers proceeded to tack on two points to that lead and enjoyed a 46-24 advantage heading into halftime.

Jackson State was strong from deep in the period, knocking down four three-point shots to account for 12 of its 24 points. JSU continued to preserve its halftime lead before going on an 8-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Avent, to expand its lead further to 66-39 with 2:19 to go in the third.

Before the third period was over, the Tigers added three points to that lead and entered the fourth quarter with a 72-42 edge. Jackson State played well near the basket, scoring 16 of its 26 points in the paint.

The Jackson State Tigers kept its lead intact before going on an 11-0 run, finished off by Crump’s jumper, to grow the lead to 85-45 with 7:16 to go in the contest. JSU kept expanding the margin and coasted the rest of the way for the 101-51 win.

Jackson State took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 22 of its 29 points in the paint.
