PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland Trail Blazers, in partnership with Alaska Airlines, are set to expand their annual HBCU to the Pros Night into an entire weekend of festivities, celebrating the rich heritage and contributions of HBCUs. The event, scheduled to culminate on Feb. 25 with a game against the Charlotte Hornets, will feature the renowned Prairie View A&M University Marching Storm Band from Texas.

Under the direction of Dr. Timmey Zachery, the Marching Storm Band will travel to Portland courtesy of Alaska Airlines, marking a significant highlight of the weekend. The collaboration aims to immerse the Portland community in the vibrant culture and traditions of HBCUs, showcasing these institutions’ considerable role in fostering leadership, pride, and academic excellence among Black Americans.

“We are thrilled to bring the unique energy and spirit of the PVAMU Marching Storm to Portland,” said Dr. Zachery. “This partnership not only celebrates the HBCU experience but also aims to inspire young Black and brown students in the Pacific Northwest to envision themselves at such esteemed institutions.”

The Trail Blazers and Alaska Airlines are committed to highlighting the impact of HBCUs and their alumni, including notable Black leaders and members of historically Black fraternities and sororities. “Our goal is to serve as a bridge for young people, encouraging them to pursue higher education at HBCUs and beyond,” stated Michelle Jalali, Director of DEI for the Trail Blazers. “This weekend is a celebration of Black history and culture, bringing the essence of HBCU and Divine Nine traditions to our community.”

James Thomas, Director of DEI at Alaska Airlines, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the airline’s dedication to connecting Black youth with educational opportunities. “By flying in the Marching Storm, we’re bringing a piece of the HBCU spirit to Portland, inspiring the next generation to reach for their educational aspirations.”

The weekend’s events will kick off on Saturday, Feb. 24, with a performance by the Marching Storm at Junction Ave, a gathering that celebrates Black businesses and culture. The festivities will continue with a pregame mixer and career fair for local youth, featuring HBCU alumni and members of the Divine Nine fraternities and sororities.

The celebration will peak during the Trail Blazers game against the Hornets, with the Marching Storm delivering a halftime performance. Attendees will receive a booklet highlighting the weekend’s activities and the contributions of HBCU and Divine Nine alumni. The Moda Center will also feature music by DJ Drae Slapz and special videos throughout the evening, culminating with a performance of the National Anthem by Tiffany Dempsey, a PVAMU alumna and member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.

In addition to the entertainment, fans can support local initiatives and HBCUs through various activities, including a themed 360-video booth and exclusive merchandise sales, with proceeds benefiting Self Enhancement, Inc. and KairosPDX.

The Portland Trail Blazers, founded in 1970 and a beacon of community service and sustainability, continue to foster a deep connection with their community, celebrating diversity and education through events like the HBCU to the Pros Night.
