Miya Crump dropped a double-double as the Jackson State women’s basketball team won 70-54 over Mississippi Valley State on the road Saturday.

JSU improved to 10-0 in Southwestern Athletic Conference play with the win.

The Tigers had two other players score in double figures as Zakiya Mahoney tacked on 12 points and seven rebounds and Andriana Avent chipped in as well with 11 points. JSU got a 23-point performance from the bench Saturday night.

Jackson State out-rebounded Mississippi Valley State 49-36 in Saturday’s game, paced by Crump’s 11 boards. The Tigers also pulled down 15 offensive rebounds and scored 17 second-chance points. The Tigers forced 17 Mississippi Valley State turnovers. The Tigers turned those takeaways into 16 points on the other end of the floor. Taylor Woodhouse led the way individually with two steals.

After playing to a 14-14 tie early in the game, Jackson State (15-6, 10-0 SWAC) went on a 9-0 run with 4:08 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Areyanna Hunter, to take a 23-14 lead.

The Tigers then lost some of that lead but still entered the quarter break with a 23-18 advantage. Jackson State relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down four shots to account for 12 of its 23 points.

JSU kept its first-quarter lead intact before going on an 8-0 run starting at the 8:53 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Hayleigh Breland, to increase its lead to 31-18.

The Tigers proceeded to tack on one point to that lead and enjoyed a 37-23 advantage heading into halftime.
Jackson State forced three Mississippi Valley State turnovers in the period and turned them into four points.
The navy and white continued to preserve its halftime lead before going on a 7-0 run to expand its lead further to 48-29 with 3:09 to go in the third.

Before the conclusion of the third period, the Devillettes had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Tigers still entered the fourth quarter with a 52-34 edge. Jackson State played well near the basket, scoring eight of its 15 points in the paint. JSU kept its lead intact before going on a 6-0 run, finished off by Avent’s layup, to grow the lead to 63-40 with 4:33 to go in the contest.

MVSU narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Tigers still cruised the rest of the way for the 70-54 win. Jackson State took advantage of six Mississippi Valley State turnovers in the quarter, scoring eight points off of those takeaways.
