Sophomore guard/forward Jewel Watkins, a second-team all-MEAC women’s basketball selection for Coppin State last season, has officially transferred to UNC-Charlotte as her new home announced her signing with the program Wednesday.
A 5-11 sophomore from Whitehall, Ohio, Watkins led the Eagles in points per game (14.5), rebounds per game (6.4), total blocks (26) and three-point field goals made (78). She scored a career-high 35 points in CSU’s 84-81 overtime loss at William & Mary on Dec. 4, 2022.
This season was Watkins’ first as a full-time starter after beginning her career as a reserve. She made the 2021-22 MEAC all-rookie team, averaging 6.9 points and 5.2 rebounds per game. She finishes her Coppin State career with averages of 11 points and 5.8 rebounds per contest, along with 99 three-pointers made.

Watkins announced in March that she would be entering the transfer portal before committing to Charlotte on April 1. The school made her addition official on Wednesday.
“We are excited to welcome Jewel to our team,” 49ers head coach Cara Consuegra said in the school’s press release. “One of our goals in this spring recruiting class is to increase our scoring ability. Jewel knows how to score and has the tools to do it well on all three levels.
“She is a tremendous three-point shooter and gets her shot off quickly. That, along with her size and length, will help us be competitive with bigger guards in The American. Jewel is highly motivated, ready to work and will contribute to our winning culture. We are so happy to bring such a fantastic player and person to our team.”
