One day after holding NFL Pro Day, a key piece to Bowie State’s championship defense has made a huge decision as All-America defensive end Jonathan Ross announced Thursday he will be transferring to the University of South Florida to resume his collegiate career.

In the two seasons Ross played with Bowie State, he recorded 126 total tackles (69 solo tackles), 15.0 sacks, 41.5 tackles for loss, seven forced fumbles and three pass breakups.

He racked up numerous awards including CIAA Defensive Rookie of the Year and CIAA All-Rookie Team in 2019, All-CIAA First Team, Super Region Two Defensive Player of the Year, Ron Lenz Defensive Player of the Year, D2CCA and Don Hansen All-American First Team in 2021.

This is another tremendous blow to Bowie State’s defense as longtime defensive coordinator Antoine Sewell has now moved on to Alabama State in the same position.

In addition, several big-name players from their secondary (Tevin Singleton, Myles Wolfolk, Wesley Bowers and Simeon Gatling) are pursuing a career at the pro level.

The Bulldogs are in the midst of a run in which they have won three straight CIAA championships including this past season in which they had their best Division II playoff performance in school history advancing to the regional final.

Not only that but Bowie has appeared in five of the last six CIAA championship games winning 10 or more games in each of the last three seasons.

Bowie State runs like a well-oiled machine led by the longest-tenured head coach in the CIAA Damon Wilson. It will be interesting to see how he overcomes these changes getting the Bulldogs to their ultimate goal of a Division II championship.
