SAN ANTONIO – Incarnate Word, an already explosive offensive unit, got plenty of assistance from miscues and penalties from the Prairie View squad and the Cardinals rode their opportunities to a 40-9 victory Saturday evening at the Gayle and Tom Benson Stadium.

PVAMU which had won their first meeting in 2017, with a 47-28 win, suffered four turnovers in the game.

“Turnovers are something we must work on going into next week’s game,” said head football coach Eric Dooley. “We have a lot of things that we need to fix. We didn’t play our best game not to take anything from them (Incarnate Word). They came out and executed in all three phases of the game. We will have to go back look at the tape and prepare for our home opener.”

Both teams were fairly even on total offense yards in the contest. PVAMU had 327 to UIW 321. The numbers on paper does not indicate the score.

The Cardinals came out swinging early in the first quarter as jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first four minutes of the game. After a field goal with 5:59 left on the clock and interception that ended in a 1:46 drive and 16 yards gave Incarnate Word their first 17 points of the game to end the quarter.

Another interception offered the Cardinals another opportunity to score from eight yards out and ending the quarter with a 30-0 lead going into half time.
Incarnate Word made it 40-0 to end the third quarter mistakes continued to plague the Panthers as they went into the fourth quarter.

The start of the fourth saw PVAMU score their first points of the game on a 22 yard field goal to put the score at 40-3. The final score was 40-9 after sophomore Colbey Washington scored a 25 yard touchdown with 7:09 left on the clock. Neither team was able to capitalize on penalties to end the game with the Cardinals walking away with the victory.

Kristian Mosley led the ground game with 50 yards on 13 carries. Graduate student Jawon Pass put up 188 yards in the air going 18-36. He threw three interceptions and was sacked once. Washington caught four passes for 49 yards.

Senior Tre’Shaud Smith headlined the defense with nine tackles.

Prairie View A&M will return to action on Saturday, September 18 for its home opener at Panther Stadium. The Panthers will host Houston Baptist University at 6 p.m.
