Virginia Union University’s women’s basketball team will face Bowie State University in the opening round of the NCAA Atlantic Region Tournament on Friday, March 13, in Indiana, Pa.
Indiana University of Pennsylvania will be the host institution for the Atlantic Region.
The Lady Panthers (23-4) will enter the tournament as the #5 seed, while Bowie State (25-5) will enter as the #4 seed. The winner of that game will face the winner of #1 Indiana (Pa.) and Fayetteville State University.
This marks the fifth straight year that Virginia Union has made it to the NCAA Tournament, a record for a VUU women’s program.
Virginia Union faced Bowie State three times already this season. The Bulldogs defeated the Lady Panthers 49-44 on January 30 in Bowie, Md., but VUU downed Bowie State 59-44 on February 19 in Barco-Stevens Hall in Richmond, Va.
The two teams tangled a third time in the semi-finals of the 2020 CIAA Tournament in Charlotte, N.C., with Bowie State coming away with a 53-41 win over VUU on February 28.
First-round matchups and seeds include No. 1 Indiana (Pa.) vs. No. 8 Fayetteville State, No. 2 Gannon (Pa.) vs. No. 7 California (Pa.), No. 3 Glenville (W.Va.) State vs. No. 6 Notre Dame (Ohio) and No. 4 Bowie State vs. No. 5 Virginia Union.
All four first-round games will be played on Friday, March 13, with the semifinals the following evening on March 14. The Atlantic Region Championship will be played on Monday, March 16, with the winner advancing to the Elite 8 in Birmingham, Ala.
