BIRMINGHAM, Ala.- The Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) has announced the suspension of ten student-athletes and two managers, following an altercation involving the Texas Southern University and Alabama State University women’s basketball teams on Monday, February 3. Each of the individuals involved violated conference policy, Section III, Article 12, Item 3 (Acts of Unsportsmanlike Conduct and Penalties) of the SWAC Constitution, Bylaws and Sports Regulations.
After a comprehensive review of the postgame video footage, five Texas Southern student-athletes (Ciani Cryor, Britnee Gabriel, Jekalen Jones, Niya Mitchell, and Tamaria White) and five student-athletes from Alabama State along with two managers (Taylor Aikerson, Kaeani Berry, Zomoria Clark, Dereseia Randle, Aniyah Smith, Logan Young manager, and Jervon Mannery-Gaither manager) were found to have been in violation.
Thus, Texas Southern student-athletes (Ciani Cryor and Britnee Gabriel) have been suspended for the Lady Tigers’ next game Saturday, February 8, at Prairie View A&M. Texas Southern student-athletes (Jekalen Jones, Niya Mitchell, and Tamaria White) have been suspended for the Lady Tigers’ next two games Saturday, February 8, at Prairie View A&M and Saturday, February 15, vs. Jackson State.
Alabama State student-athletes (Taylor Aikerson and Dereseia Randle) have been suspended for the Lady Hornets’ next game Saturday, February 8, 2020, at Mississippi Valley State. Alabama State student-athletes (Kaeani Berry, Zomoria Clark, and Aniyah Smith) have been suspended for the Lady Hornets’ next two games Saturday, February 8, at Mississippi Valley State and Monday, February 10, at Arkansas-Pine Bluff.
Alabama State manager Logan Young has been suspended for the Lady Hornets’ next two games Saturday, February 8, at Mississippi Valley State and Monday, February 10, at Arkansas-Pine Bluff. Alabama State manager Jervon Mannery-Gaither has been suspended indefinitely pending further investigation.
In addition to the suspensions, the Southwestern Athletic Conference has levied fines in the amount of $5,000 against both Texas Southern and Alabama State.
