PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – Freshman Demondre Chapman recorded his first career double-double as four Panthers scored in double figures during Prairie View A&M’s 82-58 victory over Arlington Baptist College on Tuesday evening in the William Nicks Building.
Playing on one day’s rest followed by a late arrival time to the campus the day before, it took some time for the Panthers to get their legs back in the first half. Once their legs came back, the Panthers took care of business as the team closed out the first half on a 17-0 run over the final 5:32 for a 48-22 halftime advantage.
The Panthers were never threatened in the second half as they led by as much as 35 points (75-40) following a three-pointer from sophomore guard Beloved Rogers with 8:18 remaining. Prairie View eventually cooled down as the game winded down as ABC closed out the contest with a 7-0 run over the final three minutes of play.
A true freshman forward from Flint, Mich., Chapman scored 16 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, eight of which were offensive. Redshirt freshman forward Cortney Bell scored 13 points and pulled down seven boards while sophomore guard Beloved Rogers and freshman point guard Jeff Wherry scored 12 and 11, points respectively.
Prairie View will have little time to rest as they begin a 10-day swing that begins in Philadelphia, Pa. and ends in Cancun, Mexico as they participate in the annual Cancun Challenge. The American set of games begin Thursday as Prairie View battles LaSalle at 6 p.m. followed by a match-up at Providence also at 6 p.m. on Saturday. The challenge shifts to Cancun on Tuesday, Nov. 23 with a meeting versus North Florida.
