Inclement weather has had a tremendous impact on early season college football games, though the year is not even a month old.
Thanks to a cancellation and an NCAA waiver, Bethune-Cookman is now scheduled to play Nebraska next month.
Nebraska announced Thursday that it will play BCU on Oct. 27, replacing Akron, whose Sept. 1 season opener was washed away by storms.
“Nebraska contacted us in great need of an opponent to complete their schedule because of the cancellation and we were virtually one of the only institutions with the open date of October 27 this year,” Lynn W. Thompson, BCU Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics said in a news release. “We have been in this situation before and had no options. So, after talking it over with our staff and administration – and with the support of the MEAC office, we were able to get the game approved.”
Nebraska will reportedly compensate Bethune-Cookman $800,000 to come to Lincoln, which was scheduled to be the team’s bye.
BCU agreed to the offer before submitting a waiver to the NCAA to play a 12th regular season game. The NCAA approved the waiver Thursday.
“This will allow our student-athletes an opportunity to play in one of the historic stadiums in college football against one of the nations’ great football programs,” head coach Terry Sims said. “We established a good relationship with the current staff at Nebraska when they were at UCF, and we are fortunate to be in a position to get the deal done.”
A scheduled kickoff time has not been determined.
