NORFOLK, Va., March 5, 2018 – No. 6 seed Morgan State survived an upset bid from rival Coppin State, the No. 11 seed, to win 58-51 in the women’s first round of the 2018 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Basketball Tournament on Monday at Norfolk Scope Arena.

Tykyrah Williams (19 points, 13 rebounds) and Lexus Spears (14 points, 12 rebounds) both recorded double-doubles for the Lady Bears (16-14).

Morgan State will take on No. 3 seed Hampton on Thursday in the quarterfinals at 12 p.m.

The Lady Bears had a 10-point lead at the half, 30-20, but Coppin State staged a comeback that started with a 12-9 third quarter. That cut Morgan State’s lead to 39-32 at the start of the fourth quarter, and the Eagles opened the frame with a 15-5 run to take a 47-44 lead after a Candice Beverly layup with 6:30 to play.

Lucas followed with a layup of her own with 4:00 to go to give the Eagles a 49-46 lead.

But that was Coppin State’s final field goal of the game, as Morgan State closed the game on a 12-2 run.

Genesis Lucas led Coppin State (6-23) with 16 points, while Chance Graham added 15 points and 12 boards.
