None of the vacant, or soon-to-be vacant, head coaching jobs with the black college football ranks have been filled since a wave of firings and resignations last month.
But Florida A&M might be closer to landing its next head coach.
A source with knowledge of the situation has confirmed with HBCU Sports that Florida A&M has made a verbal offer to give Prairie View head coach Willie Simmons its vacant head coaching job. The source indicated that Simmons has not yet accepted the offer, but that a decision will be made within 24 hours.
Simmons, who is 20-11 at Prairie View as head coach over the last three seasons, has been targeted by FAMU as its main target after Alex Wood resigned in late November after going 8-25 since 2015.
Before FAMU hired Wood, Simmons was one of eight candidates for the position following a successful stint as offensive coordinator at Alcorn State, where he orchestrated one of the top offense in the FCS and helped the Braves win the Black National Championship in 2014.
