Rob Amboree Named Assistant Women’s Basketball Coach At Prairie View A&M

PVAMU Panther HeadPRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – Prairie View A&M head women’s basketball coach Toyelle Wilson finalized her staff with the addition of Rob Amboree as the team’s assistant coach.

Prior to his current role, Amboree served as the head coach of Cy-Fair Shock, a Nike Elite Travel team and one of the top programs in the country for the last four years. In addition to serving as the program’s head coach, he provided individual training, recruiting and instruction to the team’s members.

Amboree is considered one of the most influential persons in women’s grassroots basketball in Texas. He has made a national name for himself after coaching dozens of his former players to play Division l basketball. He has coached and trained some of the best players in the country including the nation’s top-ranked player in 2010, Chiney Ogwumike.

For five years prior to joining the Prairie View staff, he also was the Varsity Assistant coach at Texas girl’s basketball powerhouse Bellaire High School in Bellaire, Texas. In his five years at Bellaire, 10 girls have received NCAA Division l scholarships. In the 2007-08 season, Amboree helped lead Bellaire to a 35-2 record and a USA Today No. 3 National Ranking, both the highest in school history. He also helped lead the Lady Cardinals to back-to-back Regional Final games in 2008-09 and 2009-10. In Rob’s five years at Bellaire he helped compile a 150-28 record.

During his four years with Cy-Fair Shock, Amboree coached 21 players who went on to play NCAA Division I basketball, including three McDonald’s All-Americans, three Gatorade State Players of the Year, five USA Olympic Gold Medalists and two Gatorade National Girls Basketball Players of the Year. The McDonald’s All-Americans include Nneka Ogwumike (Cy-Fair HS, TX – Stanford), Taber Spani (Metro Academy, Mo. – Tennessee) and Chiney Ogwumike (Cy-Fair HS, TX – Stanford). Nneka, Taber, and Chiney were also named Gatorade State Players of the Year in 2008, 2009 and 2010, respectively. The five USA Olympic Gold Medalists include Nneka Ogwumike, Taber Spani, Alexia Standish, Cassie Peoples, and Chiney Ogwumike. The two Gatorade National Girls Basketball Players of the Year were Nneka Ogwumike and Chiney Ogwumike.

A 2002 graduate of Houston Baptist University with a bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology, Amboree spent seven years as a middle school (Albright Middle School 03-04) and high school coach. He also played four years for the Huskies where they won four straight conference championships and also went to the National Tournament four consecutive years. In 2001, Amboree was named team captain and was an Academic All-Conference selection. In Rob’s four years at HBU they were a combined 110-30.
