DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) – Larry Brihm, Jr. threw for 262 yards and a score and reliever Akevious Williams threw the go-ahead touchdown with 3:10 remaining to lift Bethune-Cookman past Hampton 24-21 on Saturday inside Municipal Stadium. The game was Homecoming 2017 for the homestanding Wildcats, welcoming a capacity crowd of 10,951 back to Daytona Beach for the contest.

Bethune-Cookman defensive back Sam Marc intercepted a Delmon Williams’ pass and Adam Brown missed a game-tying 29-yard field goal attempt as time expired on Hampton’s final two drives.

On the Wildcats’ game-winning drive, Brihm was 5-for-6 passing for 53 yards and picked up a key first down with an 11-yard run. After driving Bethune-Cookman (4-4, 3-2 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) to Hampton’s 7-yard line, on fourth-and-goal, Akevious Williams, who replaced Brihm periodically throughout the contest in a predetermined two-quarterback system instituted by third-year Head Coach Terry Sims, entered and threw a touchdown to redshirt senior receiver Jawill Davis.

Delmon Williams gave Hampton (5-3, 4-1 MEAC) the lead with an 8-yard scoring run with 3:46 left in the third quarter.

Bethune Cookman led 14-0 early-on when Brihm, who was 19 of 29 for 262 yards on the day, threw 15 yards to Frank Brown and Tupac Isme had a 16-yard scoring run. Isme had two receptions for 122 yards, including a perfectly called 56-yard screen play that setup the game’s opening score for the Maroon and Gold in the first quarter.

Hampton was led offensively by Ronald Bell with eight receptions for 79 yards and two touchdowns. The defense was aided by Diarrassouba with a game-high nine tackles (six primary stops).

The Bethune-Cookman defense was sparked by the play of defensive end Todney Evans who collected a team-high seven tackles (three solo), including a pair of quarterback sacks on Hampton’s Williams. Evans added a pair of pass breakups to his credit as well. Behind him was senior safety Diquan Richardson with six tackles and a pass deflection, as well as Devin James with six tackles (three solo) and a quarterback hurry.

Bethune-Cookman now turns its attention to Morgan State as the Wildcats will celebrate Senior Appreciation Day on Saturday, Nov. 4, back at Municipal Stadium. Kickoff for that game is slated for 4 p.m.
