Jackson State falls to 0-5, loses to Prairie View A&M 38-9

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – The Jackson State football team fell to a 0-5 record Saturday evening after falling 38-9 to the Prairie View A&M Panthers in Southwestern Athletic Conference action. The Panthers improved to 2-2 and 2-0 in conference play.

Once again the turnover bug reared its ugly head for JSU. The Tigers had five turnovers with four being lost fumbles. The Panthers only had one turnover. The Tigers also hurt themselves with eight penalties for 55 yards. PVAM had five penalties for 56 yards.

For the game, JSU averaged 3.9 yards per play while the Panthers averaged 6.2 yards per plan. JSU had 225 total yards while PVAM had 439.

JSU started the scoring in the game when Christian Jacquemin nailed a 43-yard field goal with 9:01 left in the first quarter. The score capped a 12 play, 49-yard drive. However, the Tigers would be held scoreless for most of the game, until quarterback Jordan Williams connected with Jevon Floyd for a 19-yard touchdown strike with 1:07 left in the game.

After JSU’s initial score of the game, Prairie View scored the next 38 points. KhaDarel Hodge hauled in a 22-yard TD pass from Lavell McCuller at the 7:05 mark in the first quarter. Zach Elder then hit a 26-yard field goal to increase the PVAM lead to 10-3 with 4:56 left in the first. A little over two minutes later Markcus Handy scored on a 76-yard pass from McCuller to make the score 17-3.

Neither team scored in the second quarter, but PVAM got on the scoreboard shortly after halftime. Sta’Fon McCray capped a seven play, 34-yard drive with a one-yard run to increase the lead to 24-3 with 11:32 left in the third quarter. With 1:22 left in the third Dawonya Tucker scored on a six-yard run. The play capped an eight play, 67-yard drive and increased the score to 31-3.

The Panthers scored their final touchdown of the game with 2:59 left in the fourth when Kalen Riles scored on a four-yard pass from Neiko Hollins making the score 38-3.

JSU concluded the scoring when Floyd hauled in a beautiful 19-yard pass from Jordan Williams. Quitten Brown led the Tigers in rushing with 55-yards, after rambling off a 52-yard run which set up the final score and only touchdown of the game for JSU. Jordan Johnson rushed for 24-yards on only six attempts.

Brent Lyles passed for 64-yards, completing 7-of-11 pass attempts with one interception. Jarrad Hayes passed for 53-yards, going 10-for-13 and Jordan Williams’ only pass attempt of the game went for a touchdown.

Romello Shumake led JSU with six receptions for 34-yards while Jevon Floyd caught three passes for 40-yards and Carle Ollie hauled in three passes for 22-yards. Andre Lloyd and Charles Anderson each recorded nine tackles for the Tigers. Tonea Alex recorded his first career interception on Saturday.

Lavell McCuller passed for a game-high 190-yards and two touchdowns and rushed for a game-high 68-yards en route to the victory. Darius Floyd hauled in five passes for 42-yards to lead the Panthers in receiving.
