Arkansas-Pine Bluff 64. Prairie View A&M 47

PINE BLUFF, Ark. – A stout second half of defense propelled Arkansas-Pine Bluff to a 64-47 victory over Prairie View A&M Monday night.

Down 31-27 at the break, the Lady Lions (6-12, 3-4 SWAC) smothered the Panther offense, as PVAMU went 2-for-29 — after shooting 46.7 percent in the first half — over the third and fourth quarters. UAPB managed to outscore the Lady Panthers 37-16 over the course of the second half as sparked by an 8-0 Lions run to open the third quarter.

The Lady Lions had three players in double figures, led by Destiny Brewton’s 14. Brewton added five boards and five assists. Niya Head added 11 points and eight boards, and Shawntayla Harris went for 10 points and eight boards.

PVAMU’s (7-12, 2-5 SWAC) Alexus Parker and Dominique Newman each scored 13. Jeronia Allen added 12.

Alabama State 75, Southern 70

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Britney Wright went off for 35 points and eight rebounds as Alabama State pushed its win streak to six games following a 75-70 victory over Southern Monday night, snapping the Jaguars’ five-game win streak.

A back and forth game early on, the contest initially turned midway in the second quarter when, with the scored tied 28-all, Alabama State (7-10, 6-1 SWAC) closed the first half on a 15-5 run and took a 43-35 lead to the lockers. Wright scored 12 points in the frame.

Southern (8-8, 6-2 SWAC) made its move in the third quarter, as a 16-7 run gave the Jaguars its first lead since early in the first. Alabama State took a two-point lead into the final quarter, and after the teams were tied 68-68 with 1:22 left, Alabama State’s Daniele Ewert closed the deal, scoring the Hornets’ final six points as she ended her night with 10 points.

Tatiyana Calhoun added 14 points for Alabama State. Samantha Duncan led SU with 15 points. Miaya Crowder scored 14.

Alcorn State 73, Alabama A&M 57

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Eight of Alcorn State’s nine players scored in a 73-57 win at Alabama A&M on Monday night.

Tied 16-16 after one, the Lady Braves pulled away in part to a plus-10 scoring advantage in the second quarter. Alabama A&M was unable to make up the deficit, as a 10-2 Bulldogs run that brought them within two of Alcorn State during the third quarter was cancelled out by 14 unanswered points from the Braves.

The Lady Bulldogs outrebounded Alcorn State 32-24, but were minus-7 in the turnover category, committing 16 to Alcorn State’s nine.

Alexus Freem scored 15 points with six boards and five assists to lead Alcorn (5-14, 5-3 SWAC). Ebony Johnson put up 13 points for AAMU (2-14, 0-7 SWAC), and Jameica Cobb added 12. Alcorn State’s bench outscored AAMU’s 24-10.
