Mississippi Valley State 60, Alabama A&M 58

ITTA BENA, Miss. – Mississippi Valley State narrowly edged out Alabama A&M 60-58 Saturday for the Devilettes second consecutive win. MVSU was led by Ashley Beals, who netted 16 points while grabbing 9 boards. Christina Reed chipped in 13 points along with four boards in the win.

The Bulldogs were led by Ebony Johnson, who scored 14 points while grabbing eight boards and dishing out two assists in the loss.

Alabama A&M (2-10, 0-3 SWAC) got off to a fast start, leading 20-13 after the first quarter. The Bulldogs would extend its lead with a 16 point second quarter to take a 36-28 halftime lead.

Mississippi Valley State (5-8, 2-0 SWAC) owned the third quarter. The Devilettes outscored the Bulldogs 23-8 in the third, for a 51-44 lead heading into the final frame. MVSU would be outscored 14-9 in the fourth by the bulldogs, but the Devilettes would hang on for the two point win.

Mississippi Valley State and Alabama A&M will each be in action again on Jan 9. The Devillettes will face Alabama State, while Alabama A&M will face Arkansas Pine Bluff. Both games are slated to begin at 5:30PM CT.

Texas Southern 70, Prairie View A&M 62

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – Texas Southern extended its win streak to four games with a 70-62 win over Prairie View A&M on Saturday. The Tigers were led by Joyce Kennerson, who scored a game high 25 points while grabbing three boards in the win.

Prairie View A&M (5-10, 0-3 SWAC) was led by Alexus Parker, who netted 22 points and grabbed three boards in the loss.

The Panthers took an early lead in this one, outscoring Texas Southern (9-5, 3-0 SWAC) 18-14 in the first quarter. The Tigers would comeback in the second half. Texas Southern would outscore PVAM 18-14 in the third to cut Prairie View’s lead to just five entering the fourth. The Tigers would outscore the Panthers 22-13 in the final frame, leading to the win.

Both teams will be in action again on Jan 14, when Texas Southern takes on Grambling State at 5:00PM CT, while Prairie View A&M will face Jackson State at 3:00PM CT.

Southern 71, Grambling State 68

GRAMBLING, La. – Southern defeated Grambling State 71-68 on Saturday night in Grambling. The Jaguars were led by Miaya Crowder, who scored 20 points and added three assists in the win.

The Tigers were led by Shakyla Hill, who scored a game high 22 points while pulling down six boards. Jazmin Boyd contributed 18 points and four rebounds in the loss.

The contest was back and forth early on. Southern (4-7, 2-1 SWAC) jumped out to a 14-10 lead after the first quarter. Grambling State (4-10, 2-1 SWAC) would pull even in the second, outscoring the Jaguars 22-18 to tie the score at 36 points apiece going into the second half. Southern would outscore Grambling State 23-21 in the third and 16-15 in the fourth, to take the four point win.

Next up, Southern will take on Jackson State, while Grambling State will face Alcorn State. Both matchups will tipoff at 5:30PM CT on Jan. 9.

Alabama State 74, Arkansas Pine Bluff 62

PINE BLUFF, Ark. – Alabama State earned its second consecutive win with a 74-62 victory over Arkansas Pine Bluff on Saturday. The Hornets were led by Shamyiah Smith, who scored 16 points off the bench, along with two boards. Britney Wright also chipped in 13 points and seven boards in the win.

Destiny Brewton had a very strong performance for UAPB despite the loss, tallying a game high 19 points along with one board and one assist.

Alabama State (3-10, 2-1 SWAC) got off to a fast start, jumping out to a 25-13 lead after one quarter. Arkansas Pine Bluff (3-10, 0-2 SWAC) chipped away at the Hornets lead in the second, outscoring ALST 11-7 in that frame, to trail 32-24 going into the second half. Alabama State would extend its lead to 17 with a 23 point third quarter. That lead would be enough for the Hornets, who would ultimately win by 12.

Alabama State and UAPB will each be in action again on Jan. 9. The Hornets will take on Mississippi Valley State, while the Golden Lions will take on Alabama A&M, with both contests getting underway at 5:30PM CT.
