MONTGOMERY—Alabama State University head football coach Reggie Barlow welcomed the 2010 edition of the ASU Hornets to campus yesterday to begin preparations for the upcoming season.
The Hornets return 45 letterwinners from last year’s squad including six starters on offense and five on defense. The 2010 season will also welcome two new coordinators as former Grambling head coach Melvin Spears will take over the offense and former ASU standout Cedric Thornton takes over the defense.
ASU will report to the practice field today at 7:30 p.m. for the first of nine practices that will lead up to the first scrimmage scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 14. The first five days will see the Hornets on the field once during the day and starting on Monday, Aug. 9, ASU will begin their two-a-days. ASU’s practice today was originally scheduled for 3 p.m., but was moved to a later start due to the extreme heat that has gripped the south.
