SAVANNAH, Ga. – Savannah State University announces the hiring of Edric Poitier as the next volleyball head coach.
Poitier comes from Bluefield State College, where he won 35 games in three season from 2013-15. He took over a program that went 6-113 in five seasons prior, but bounced back for a 14-15 record in year two and a 21-7 record in his final season with the Lady Blues.

WSSU went 14-120 in four seasons prior to Poitier taking over, but he went 43-51 overall. In his first season at WSSU, he went 13-15 and 19-11 in year two, including a 15-3 CIAA record, and finished his final season with an 11-24 overall record, including an 11-7 mark in conference play.
Poitier started his collegiate head coaching career at St. Augustine’s College from 1999-03 and posted a 113-34 record in five seasons with four seasons with 20-plus wins and won four consecutive conference championships.
In his first year, Poitier went 14-13 overall, including 14-6 in conference play and went 23-6 overall, including a 19-2 in conference play en route to a CIAA Championship and CIAA Coach of the Year in year two. Poitier followed up with his second consecutive CIAA Championship with a 22-7 record and a 21-0 conference record in the third season and went 29-3 overall and 21-0 in conference play in his fourth season with a CIAA Championship.
In his final season at St. Augustine’s, Poitier went 25-5 overall and 21-0 in conference play and won his fourth consecutive CIAA Championship and was named the CIAA Coach of the Year.
St. Augustine’s went on a 77-game conference win streak over the last four-plus seasons. The team also led all Division II schools in service aces in 2002 and 2003.
Overall, Poitier has posted a 192-135 record in 11 seasons as a head coach in Division II, three time CIAA Coach of the Year, four consecutive CIAA Championships and three NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional appearances.
In between his time at St. Augustine’s and Winston-Salem State, Poitier continued his career as a police officer in the Bahamas and coached two club teams in five years from 2004-10.
Prior to St. Augustine’s, Poitier coached the Bahamas Women’s National Team from 1992-99. During his time, he led the team to two gold medals and three silver medals at the Regional Caribbean Volleyball Championships.
Poitier played with the Bahamas Men’s National Team as a setter for 13 years from 1979-92 and won the bronze medal at Commonwealth Volleyball Championship in London in 1981.
The Nassau, Bahamas native graduated from St. Augustine’s in 2003 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice.
