Lane 62, Morehouse 59
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – No. 3 Lane snuck by No. 2 Morehouse and advanced to the semifinals with a 62-59 win in the quarterfinals of the 2016 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Men’s Basketball Tournament, Thursday evening at Bill Harris Arena in Birmingham, Ala.
Lane moved to 18-12 on the season and was led by Kendarius Ash who scored a game-high 19 points and 12 rebounds. The Dragons trailed 32-27 at halftime but managed to take the lead late in the second half to secure the win.
Morehouse finished the season with a 15-10 record. Ayinde Russell finished with a team-high 12 points and eight rebounds for the Maroon Tigers.
Lane will face top-seeded Stillman in a semifinal game set for Friday, March 4 at 7:15 p.m.
Claflin 79, Miles 64
No. 3 Claflin advanced to the semifinals with a 79-64 victory over No. 2 Miles, Thursday evening in the 2016 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Men’s Basketball Tournament quarterfinals at Bill Harris Arena in Birmingham, Ala.
Claflin will face No. 4 LeMoyne-Owen in a semifinal contest set to take place Friday, March 4 at 3:15 p.m.
The Panthers (16-12 overall) placed a trio of players in double-digit scoring and were led by Trevor Dantzler and Adolph Caldwell who each had 17 points.
Miles closed out the 2015-16 season with a 17-13 record and was led by Maiscel Grier’s 16 points. Willie Gray added 15 points for the Golden Bears.
Women
Miles 53, Claflin 45
No. 2 Miles was able to escape No. 3 Claflin with a 53-45 win in Thursday’s quarterfinal game of the 2016 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Women’s Basketball Tournament at Bill Harris Arena in Birmingham, Ala.
Miles improved to 17-11 with the victory and was led by Amoni Walker who finished with 12 points. Morgan Hardy recorded 11 points and nine rebounds for the Golden Bears. Miles tallied 39 rebounds with 29 of them coming from the defensive end. The Golden Bears also held Claflin to a 28.6 percent (16-of-56) shooting performance.
Claflin finished the 2015-16 with a 17-11 record and was led by Jhontay Giles who scored a game-leading 15 points. Shaniece Brown added 10 points for the Lady Panthers.
Miles moves on to the semifinals where it will face No. 1 Benedict on Friday, March 4 at 1 p.m.
Central State 64, Albany State 56
No. 3 Central State defeated No. 2 Albany State 64-56 to advance to the semifinals of the 2016 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Women’s Basketball Tournament, Thursday evening at Bill Harris Arena in Birmingham, Ala.
The Marauders (14-13 overall) were led by Ghameerah McCullers who recorded 16 points. Bria Spaulding also added 13 points in the win. CSU’s defense forced Albany State (14-13) to 27 turnovers.
Keidra Green led the Golden Rams with 16 points followed by Kayla Green who posted a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Artisha Holston grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds.
CSU will face top-seed Kentucky State on Friday, March 4 at 5:30 p.m. in the semifinals.
