With a 40-34 win over Alcorn State, Prairie View has asserted themselves as a serious contender for a SWAC championship Saturday.
The Panthers were dominant from the start, jumping out to a 40-14 first-half lead before withstanding an Alcorn second-half surge to grab the win.
Prairie View (6-2, 6-1 SWAC) remains in sole possession of second place in the SWAC West, a full game ahead third-place Southern who won 57-24 over hapless Arkansas-Pine Bluff, and one game behind first-place Grambling State, also a winner Saturday.
With the Panthers final two games of the regular season against Alabama State and Jackson State — both with a combined 7-9 record — it is possible they could win the West if Grambling slips up against UAPB and Southern.
