Alcorn State Continues No. 1 Ranking In HBCU Football Polls

Hartly, DE – Alcorn State University and Tuskegee University held on to the top spots following the third full week of HBCU football action. The Braves of ASU remained in the top FCS position while TU’s Golden Tigers were unanimously picked #1 in DivisionII/NAIA HSRN Football Polls.

In the Division I FCS poll, Alcorn State celebrated “Family and Friends Day” by demolishing Mississippi Valley State, 55-14, in their home opener at Spinks-Casem Stadium.

North Carolina A&T moved up to second place followed by South Carolina State, Southern and Bethune-Cookman.

In Division II, Tuskegee’s 28-13 win over Winston-Salem State left no doubt about their strength in the division. The Golden Tigers are undefeated and captured all the first place votes of the HSRN pollsters.

Virginia Union and Virginia State tied for second place leading a strong representation for the CIAA. Elizabeth City has moved into third place followed by Bowie State and Livingstone. Chowan enters the poll at #7 following their stunning defeat of Delaware State, 31-30, in Dover.

BOXTOROW Polls

Split vote for third straight week; Alcorn prevails once again with coaches, North Carolina A&T with media

In a week when only two top-10 teams fell, Alcorn State remained No. 1 in the BOXTOROW coaches poll.box2row logo

Tennessee State fell to FCS No. 1 Jacksonville State and fell from No. 1 to No. 4 in the BOXTOROW media poll.

North Carolina A&T with its 14-7 victory over Elon is now No. 1 with the media.

In the coaches poll last week, five teams received at least one first-place vote with Alcorn receiving the most with eight. The Braves had full support this week as they claimed all but one of the 17 first-place votes.

N.C. A&T remained No. 2 while South Carolina State claimed the other first-place vote and climbed up two spots to No. 3. Southern also moved up two spots and is No. 4, while Bethune-Cookman climbed one spot and rounds out the top five.

In the media poll where N.C. A&T and Tennessee State both received seven first-place votes last week, the Aggies received eight votes this week, four more than No. 3 Alcorn State. No. 2 South Carolina State received two first-place votes and despite its loss, Tennessee State received two first-place votes and is No. 4.

Southern made the most significant jump, up three spots and rounds out the top five.

The BOXTOROW HBCU FCS coaches and media polls are administered by FROM THE PRESS BOX TO PRESS ROW. The coaches poll is voted on by the HBCU Football Championship Subdivision coaches and the media poll is voted on by media members around the country who cover HBCU football.
