Edward Waters Men Win 2015 GCAC Track & Field Championship

NEW ORLEANS, La. (GCAConf.com) – The Edward Waters College men’s team won the 2015 Gulf Coast Athletic Conference on Saturday at Tad Gormley Stadium in New Orleans, La. The Tigers had four individual event wins in winning the title, their third in the past four season.

Edward Waters totaled 156 points in winning the championship, with defending champion Dillard (121 points) and Southern University at New Orleans (103 points) following in second and third place, respectively. Voorhees College (101 points), Xavier (83 points) and Talladega College (8 points) rounded out the standings.

The Tigers got two first place finishes from Kendal Thompson who won both the hammer throw and discus. Thompson won the hammer throw for the second consecutive year. Shane Harlow (3,000 meters) and Reymond Berhane (javelin) also claimed individual titles. Edward Waters also had a championship-high 15 top-three finishes.

Second place Dillard had a pair of first place finishes, with Tobyus Simmons winning the 200 meters and Hamilton Green taking the triple jump championship. The Bleu Devils had ten athletes finish in the top three across all events.

SUNO led all schools with seven first place finishes, five in individual competition and two in team events. Alex Saunders led the way for the Knights, winning two events (1,500 meters and 400 meters). Chadwayne Vidal (100 meters), Chad Thomas (400 meter hurdles), and Sanj Powell (800 meters) were also winners. Thomas successfully defended his title in the hurdles. The team of Brian Smith, Thomas, Powell, and Saunders won the 4×800 and Thomas, Saunders, Vidal, and Powell teamed up to claim the 4×400 meter crown. SUNO earned just one point in the field events.

Voorhees College had three individual event winners and one team champion. Dishaun Randolph won both the long jump and high jump with Bobby Pearson taking the shot put. The team of Frederick Keenan, Cadarius Robinson, Kenneth Knowlin, and Randolph won the 4×100 meter relay.

Xavier’s aptly named Alex Xavier (110 meter hurdles) and Christopher August (5000 meters) also earned first place finishes.
