meaclogo.jpg Senior quarterback Vashon Winton of Delaware State was selected as the Offensive Player of the Week and Marcus Dixon of Hampton and Ronnie McCullough of Bethune-Cookman earned Co-Defensive Player of the Week honors, the league announced on Monday.

Nick Mayant of Bethune-Cookman was named Rookie of the Week, while Kellen Kemp of Delaware State and Jeremy Gilchrist of Hampton was selected as the Offensive Lineman and Special Teams Player of the Week accolades.

Winton (QB, 6-2, 195, Jr., Chicago, IL) completed 28-of-44 passes for 245 yards and two touchdowns as he led the Hornets to a seven-point overtime victory over Norfolk State University to clinch the league’s 2007 football title. He also rushed for 66 yards on 18 carries in one of the school’s biggest comebacks in football history.

Dixon (DE, 6-4, 295, Sr., Rome, Ga.) collected 15 tackles, four solo, with two and a half tackles for a loss of 11 yards in the Pirates win over Florida A&M. He also posted a sack for a 10-yard loss, two quarterback hurries, one forced fumble, one pass break up and a blocked field goal.

McCullough (LB, 6-1, 230, Sr., Tampa, Fla.) recorded 15 tackles, 11 solo, in the Wildcats win over Howard. He also added four tackles for a loss of 24 yards and three sacks for a 23-yard loss to his stellar performance. This is the fourth straight Defensive Player of the Week honor for McCullough.

Mayant (LB, 6-0, 200, Fr., Ft. Meyers, Fla.) recorded six tackles, three solo stops, to aide the Wildcats defeat the Howard Bison, 37-26.

Kemp (OT, 6-3, 310, So., Philadelphia, PA) graded out at 98-percent on all assignments as he helped pave the way for 413 total offensive yards as the Hornets defeated the Norfolk State Spartans to clinch the league’s championship title. He also posted two pancake blocks in team’s victory.

Gilchrist (WR, 5-10, 174, Jr., Virginia Beach, Va.) returned four punts for 143 yards with two touchdowns. His two touchdowns set a Pirate new single season record for the longest punt return (86 yards).

Other Top Performances

Kevin Beverly (HAM) ran for 161 yards on 29 carries with one touchdown in the Pirates victory over Florida A&M.

Rafael Bush (SCSU) posted 11 tackles, seven solo, with two for a loss of 10 yards against the Bears.

Anthony Edwards (FAMU) ran for 108 yards on 19 attempts against the Pirates.

Lucas Esquivel (B-CU) finished 3-of-4 in field goal attempts with kicks of 42, 48 and 37 yards. He was also perfect (4-of-4) on extra point kicks for the Wildcats.

Rudy Hardie (HOW) tallied five solo tackles and three assisted, including two and a half for a loss of five yards against the Wildcats. He also forced and recovered a fumble in the Bison’s loss.

Peter Gaertner (DSU) scored eight of the Hornets 28 points including the tying field goal to send the game into overtime play.

Akeem Green (DSU) recorded four tackles, one solo, and one sack for a nine-yard loss that sealed the Hornets win over the Spartans. He also posted a recovered fumble.

Brian Johnson (HOW) threw for 295 yards on 25-of-43 attempts with two touchdowns to go along with 45 yards rushing on 13 carries with one touchdown for the Bison.

Ronnie McCullough (B-CU) tallied 15 tackles, 11 solo, with four for a loss of 24 yards against the Bison.

Cleveland McCoy (SCSU) scored four touchdowns, two passing and two rushing, in the Bulldogs win over Morgan State.

Jimmie Russell (B-CU) rushed for 141 yards on 15 attempts with three touchdowns in the Wildcats win over Howard.

Vernon Wilder (FAMU) collected 15 tackles, eight solo, and two for a loss of 12 yards against Hampton
