HOUSTON, Texas – After 11 years, Alabama State University claimed the 2014-15 Southwestern Athletic Conference Championship title. The Lady Hornets defeated Southern University 73-55 Saturday afternoon at the Toyota Center. This was a rematch from the 2009-2010 championship game.
The Lady Hornets set the tempo early in the game, knocking down six threes in a row. Kayla Tucker got things going making two back to back. Daniele Ewert would come back minutes later making her appearance connecting on a three pointer.
Five minutes into the game, the Lady Hornet were up by nine points. With 7:53 remaining in the first half, ASU led 30-18. ASU led the entire game. Their biggest lead was by 18 points.
Southern University couldn’t seem to get their offense going. Alabama State defense was untouchable as well as their offense.
ASU’s Tucker led the way in the first half scoring all of her 10 points. She went 3 out of 5 from the three-point line. Alabama State’s Defensive Player of the Year, Jasmine Peeples scored 18 points and brought down nine rebounds to lead the Lady Hornets.
Britney Wright tallied 17 points and grabbed seven rebounds. The fuel to their fire, Daniel Ewert had an impressive performance all week. She added 12 points as well as Brittney Smith
The Jaguars were led by Kendra Coleman who scored a team-high 18 points. She also added three rebounds and assists. Britney Washington chipped in 10 points. Briana Green tallied a game-best 10 rebounds.
The Lady Hornets finished the game shooting 50.0 percent from the field, 46.7 from behind the arc and 63.2 percent at the charity stripe.
As a team, Southern finished shooting 30.8 percent from the field, 28.6 percent from the free throw line and 65.5 at the free-throw line.
