Texas Southern Remains Atop SWAC Standings With Overtime Win

HOUSTON — Nick Shepherd grabbed a rebound and slammed home a dunk and Madarious Gibbsmade two late free throws to give Texas Southern a 68-65 overtime victory over Alabama A&M on Monday night.

Gibbs split a pair of free throws to leave Texas Southern trailing 65-64 with 2:47 left in overtime.

Alabama A&M missed its next six shots. Gibbs missed a layup with 19 seconds left, but Shepherd was there for the rebound and the put-back dunk to give the Tigers their first lead in the extra period.

Tonnie Collier finished with 18 points, Gibbs totaled 17, with 10 assists, and Malcolm Riley had 15 for Texas Southern (11-11, 8-1).

Ladarius Tabb, who scored 16 points and 13 rebounds, had a chance to win it for the Bulldogs (5-14, 4-5) in regulation, but his jump shot rolled off the rim as time expired. Nicholas West and Rakiya Battle had 13 apiece.

Jackson State def Arkansas Pine Bluff 69-45

JACKSON, Miss. — Javeres Brent scored 21, and Kaven Bernard tied a career-high with 20 points to lead Jackson State past Arkansas-Pine Bluff 69-45 on Monday night.

Brent connected on 7 of 13 from three point range and Bernard made 7 of 13 field goals and 5 of 5 free throws for Jackson State (6-16, 4-5), which trailed 23-21 at the break after shooting just 18.5 percent (5 of 27) in the first half.

The Tigers, however, opened the second with a 28-6 run, which was capped by a three-point play by Bernard, and led 49-29 midway through.

UAPB (7-16, 4-5), which trailed by as many as 28, would get no closer than down 18 the rest of the way.

JSu made 19 of 29 (65.5 percent) second-half field goals, including 8 of 15 from three point range.

Marcel Mosley led UAPB, which made just 9 of 39 (23.1 percent) field goals, with 17 points on 1-of-13 shooting.

Mississippi Valley State def Grambling State 68-65

GRAMLBING, La. — Jeffrey Simmons scored 19 points and Mississippi Valley State edged Grambling State 68-65 on Monday.

Grambling came back from a 15-point halftime deficit and tied the game at 65 with 38 seconds left following a three-point play and then two free throws by Richard Freeman.

But Jordan Washington made 1 of 2 from the line, and after A’Torri Shine missed a three pointer, DeAngelo Priar hit two free throws with 22 seconds left to put MVSU up by three.

Mark Gray’s 3-point attempt with two second on the clock was off the mark.

MVSU (4-18, 3-6) built a 39-24 halftime lead, despite missing all eight of its 3-point attempts, as it held Grambling to 25 percent shooting from the floor (8 of 32).

Washington and Isaac Williams added 15 points apiece for the Delta Devils.

Remond Brown led Grambling State (2-17, 0-9) with 16 points and eight boards. Freeman finished with nine points.

Alabama State def Prairie View 73-71

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas — DeMarcus Robinson made a 15-footer as time expired to lift Alabama State over Prairie View 73-71 on Monday night.

Prairie View’s Karim York hit a three pointer with six seconds left to tie the game at 71. Alabama State’s Brandon Graham missed a 3-pointer with one second left, but the ball remained with the
Hornets. Officials put 0.4 seconds on the clock for Robinson’s catch-and-shoot game-winner.

Robinson hit 8 of 11 shots, including four three pointers, to lead ASU (12-6, 8-1) with 26 points. Bobby Brown made a trio of three pointers and scored 17 points with eight rebounds, and Wendell Lewis added 15 points.

Montrael Scott paced Prairie View (6-16, 4-5) with 18 points, Tre Hagood added 17 and seven rebounds and Karim York scored 12.
