JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – North Carolina Central University held a 14-point second-half advantage at East Tennessee State University, as the Eagles appeared to be well on their way to their 11th consecutive victory.

The host Buccaneers, however, closed the contest on a 15-1 run, including the go-ahead three-pointer by Jalen Riley with 13 seconds left to provide ETSU with a 61-59 come-from-behind victory inside Freedom Hall on Saturday night.

Dante Holmes topped NCCU (16-6) with a game-high 12 rebounds, while Nimrod Hilliard distributed a game-high 13 assists.

Carlton Leads Howard To Third Straight Win

Washington, DC—James “JC” Carlton poured in a career-high and James “JT” Miller and James “J-Byrd” Daniel each added 11 to lead Howard University to a 64-48 win over Morgan State in a Mid-Eastern Conference men’s game at Burr Gymnasium.

The win was the third in a row and fourth in the last five for the streaking Bison (11-10, 5-2 MEAC). It also snapped a three-game losing streak to the Bears.

Conrad Chambers came off the bench to lead Morgan State with 11 points while Cedric Blossom added 10.

Hawks Gut Out Scrappy Win, 92-82

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – The University of Maryland Eastern Shore men’s basketball team started slow, but roared back for a high-octane 92-82 victory over Coppin State on Saturday afternoon. UMES (13-10, 6-2) took home their third straight win with the gutsy result, erasing an early 13-point deficit to the Eagles.

The Hawks still stand in third place in the MEAC, now at 6-2 in conference play and 13-10 overall. The six wins are already the most since UMES finished an even .500 at 8-8 in MEAC play for the 2009-10 season. The Hawks have not won 13 games in a single season since 1994-95 when they finished 13-14.

Late Run Gives NSU 63-60 Win over Hampton

NORFOLK, Va. – A late push by the Norfolk State men’s basketball team pushed the Spartans past rival Hampton by a 63-60 score on Saturday evening in the Battle of the Bay at Joseph Echols Hall.

In front of a sellout, standing-room only crowd of 4,953, NSU fought back from a seven-point deficit with less than nine minutes to go. An 11-2 run late in the game proved to be the difference in a back-and-forth contest that saw 12 lead changes, eight in the second half alone.

Junior D’Shon Taylor led the Spartans with 16 points on 6-of-10 shooting to go with eight rebounds. Junior Jeff Short added 15 points, while junior RaShid Gaston tallied 13 points, eight boards and three assists on his 21st birthday.

Hornets Fall Short At SC State For Second Straight Loss

Orangeburg, S.C. — Delaware State cut a 14-point second half deficit to two on four occasions down the stretch, but fell short in a 78-74 loss to South Carolina State in a MEAC contest at the Smith-Hammond-Middleton Center this evening.

The Hornets dropped their second straight game to fall to 10-11 overall and 4-3 in the MEAC. The Bulldogs won for the third time in four games to improve to 8-15 and 6-3. SC State also avenged a 60-49 loss to DSU on Jan. 17.
