Prairie View 65, Texas Southern 60

HOUSTON (AP) -Darnell Hugee had 16 points and Dorian McDaniel added 12 points and eight rebounds to lead Prairie View A&M to a 65-60 victory against Texas Southern on Saturday night.

Christopher Jones had 12 points and seven steals for the Panthers (8-6, 3-0 SWAC).

Junior Treasure had 20 points and DeAndre Hall 15 for Texas Southern (6-9, 2-1).

The Tigers went on an 8-0 run to take a 49-48 lead with 6:48 remaining before Prairie View responded with 11 of the game’s next 13 points. Hugee and Jones had four points each during the stretch, which gave the Panthers a 59-51 cushion with 2:43 to play.

UAPB 82, Alabama A&M 72

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (AP) — Terrance Calvin scored 20 points and three other players had double figures in Arkansas-Pine Bluff’s 82-72 win over Alabama A&M on Saturday night.

Salavance Townsend added 15 points, and Lebaron Weathers had a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds for the Lions (2-11, 2-0 Southwestern Athletic Conference). Tavaris Washington added 11 points.

The Lions have won two straight after opening the season with 11 losses in a row.

The Lions went on a 15-4 run in the first half to take their largest lead at 25-8 with 8:52 remaining on a jumper by Weathers. The Bulldogs cut the lead to two points in the second half and trailed 72-68 with 3:07 to play before the Lions closed out the game on a 10-4 run.

Casey Cantey led the Bulldogs (3-8, 0-3) with 21 points. Evan Hilton added 20 points and Cornelius Hester had 10.

Miss. Valley State 76, Alabama State 73

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — Julius Cheeks scored 21 points to lead Mississippi Valley State to a 76-73 win over Alabama State on Saturday night.

Cheeks also added seven rebounds for the Delta Devils (2-13, 1-1 Southwestern Athletic Conference), who shot an impressive 61.9 percent from the field (26-for-42). MVSU snapped an 11-game losing streak.

A layup from Alabama State’s A.J. Spencer tied the score at 72 with 53 seconds left in the game.

Cheeks responded with two free throws to give MVSU a two-point lead with 20 seconds left, but Alabama State’s Tramayne Moorer was fouled with 8 seconds remaining.

Moorer made only 1 of 2 free throws, though, and Cheeks made two more free throws to secure the win. Menji Mundadi missed a potential game-tying 3-pointer at the buzzer.

Mundadi scored 23 to lead the Hornets (4-10, 1-2). Moorer added 22 points, going 11-for-16 from the free-throw line.

Southern 73, Grambling State 67

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Earnest Jones scored 18 points to lead Southern University to a 73-67 win over Grambling State on Saturday night.

Jones added seven rebounds for the Jaguars (3-12, 1-2 Southwestern Athletic Conference), who snapped a two-game losing streak. Norm Nixon Jr. finished with 16 points and eight rebounds in the win.

Two made free throws from Nixon tied the game at 62 with 4:24 remaining. The free throws sparked a 12-0 run for the Jaguars, and a layup from Jones made the score 72-62 with 41 seconds remaining.

Lance Fuertado led Grambling State (3-8, 1-2) with 26 points on 10 of 20 shooting. George Akpele chipped in with 16 points and six rebounds.

The Jaguars shot only 55.6 percent from the free throw line (15-for-27), but outrebounded the Tigers 43-31.

Southern’s bench outscored Grambling State’s 21-3.
