Grambling State No Match For Texas Southern, Pounded 74-33

ALCORN STATE def. MISSISSIPPI VALLEY, 52-47

LORMAN, Miss. – Alcorn State (4-10, 3-2 SWAC) defeated Mississippi Valley (2-13, 0-4 SWAC) 52-47 Saturday evening. The Lady Braves set the tempo early in the game, going on a 10-1 run in less than three minutes. With 12:17 remaining in the first half, the Devilettes cut the lead down to one point. Alcorn never let up as they increased the leady by 12 points with a little over five minutes left to play until halftime. MVSU’s Kahdejah Stevens made a layup, got fouled and knocked down her free for an and-one. Moments later, Ashley Beals was good for three points, with a free-throw and a lay-up.  With eight seconds left on the clock, Christina Reed knocked down a three-pointer, cutting the Lady Braves lead to only three points going into halftime, 29-26. The second half was back and forth action. The score tied twice, but Mississippi Valley would never take the lead. Alcorn State was led by Olivia Brown and Norianna Haynes.  Both players scored 13 points. MVSU was led by Ashley Beals who scored a team-high 16 points and added six rebounds.

PRAIRIE VIEW def. JACKSON STATE, 82-65

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – The Lady Panthers dominated Jackson State (5-11, 2-3 SWAC) as they cruised to a 82-65 victory Saturday afternoon.  Prairie View (5-11, 2-2 SWAC) was led by Jeanette Jackson who scored a game-best 22 points and added four rebounds and two assists.  Followed was Lamaria Cole with 15 points. The score was tied twice in the first half before PVAMU began to pull away. The Lady Tigers were down 11 points going into the second half. JSU score the first two points in the second half but Prairie View didn’t waste any time before they answered back.  They went on a 14-5 run, taking a 20 point lead with 14:10 remaining on the clock. JSU seemed to be back in the game with 3:07 left, only down by nine points but that was as close as they would come.  The Lady Panthers secured the victory and went on to win by 17 points. To lead Jackson State was Ayanna Hardy-Fuller and Ke’ra St. John with 13 points apiece.

SOUTHERN def. ARKANSAS-PINE BLUFF, 69-42

BATON ROUGE, La. – Southern University women’s basketball team claimed their third conference victory over Arkansas-Pine Bluff, 69-42, Saturday afternoon at the F.G. Clark Activity Center. UAPB opened the first half with a 6-3 lead on back-to-back three pointers from Diamond Richardson and Destiny Brewton. SUBR regained the lead with a 10-4 run to take a 13-10 lead with 12:12 left in the first half.  Southern University set the tempo after halftime with a 12-1 run to take a 42-23 lead. The Lady Jaguars never let up as the kept the lead the remainder of the game. Arkansas-Pine Bluff shot 45.2 percent from the field and Southern shot 42.4 percent. Kendra Coleman led Southern University with 15 points.  Jasmine Jefferson was one rebound away from recording a double-double with 13 points and nine rebounds.  Arkansas-Pine Bluff was led by Richardson with six points and three rebounds.

ALABAMA A&M def. ALABAMA STATE, 59-50

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Alganese Gatson scored a team-best 14 points to lead the Lady Bulldogs to a 59-50 victory over in-state rivalry Alabama State Saturday evening. Taylor Sippial followed with a total of 12 points and five boards. Jaylan Snowden and Brittney Strickland chipped in 11 points. Britney Wright led Alabama State with a game-high 16 points and seven rebounds. Alabama A&M shot 48.8 percent from the field, 38.5 percent from the three-point range and 58.3 percent from the free-throw line.  The Lady Hornets were 35.2 percent from the field, 15.8 percent from the three-point line and 64.3 percent from the charity stripe.

TEXAS SOUTHERN def. GRAMBLING, 74-33

HOUSTON, Texas – Brianna Sidney knocked down a game-high 20 points to lead the Lady Tigers to their third conference victory of the season. Texas Southern defeated Grambling State 74-33 Saturday evening. TSU lead the entire game. They went on a 21-2 run with 11:04 left in the first half.  Going into halftime, the Lady Tigers were up by 15, 35-20.  Second half tempo remained in TSU’s hand. Alexus Johnson connected on a three-pointer in less than a minute. Grambling State could not stop Texas Southern offensively. GSU was lead by Yosha Watson who scored 15 points and pulled down five rebounds.
