Buzzer-Beater Lifts Alabama A&M Past Arkansas-Pine Bluff

Alabama State def Mississippi Valley State 88-76

GREENWOOD, Miss. — Jamel Waters scored 17 points, nine assists and three steals as Alabama State beat Mississippi Valley State 88-76 on Monday night.  Waters would finish without a turnover.

DeMarcus Robinson scored 15 points and had seven assists, Maurice Strong was 6 of 10 from the floor for 14 points and Bobby Brown chipped in 10 points for Alabama State (8-5, 4-0).

The Hornets held a 37-30 halftime lead but broke to a 52-36 advantage early in the second period and rolled to an 88-71 advantage with 2:44 remaining in the game.

Alabama State shot 57.6 percent from the field in the second half to go 35 of 68 (51.5 percent) for the game. MVSU made just 9 of 23 field goal attempts in the first half.

Jeffrey Simmons had 20 points, Latrell Love added 18 and Rakwan Kelly chipped in 10 for MVSU (2-14, 1-2).

Buzzer-Beater Lifts Alabama A&M Past Arkansas-Pine Bluff

PINE BLUFF, Ark. — Justin Colvin hit a three pointer at the buzzer to give Alabama A&M a 51-48 victory over Arkansas Pine Bluff on Monday.

Colvin made 1 of 2 free throws with 17.9 seconds left for a 48-45 lead. Pine Bluff’s Thaddeus Handley Jr. converted a three-point play with 11.6 left for 48-all, but was called for a blocking foul on Colvin’s drive to the basket.

Colvin missed the front end of a one-and-one with 3.2 seconds left, but the rebound went of UAPB, setting up Colvin’s heroics.

Nicholas West and Colvin had 14 apiece for Alabama A&M (4-10, 3-1 SWAC) and Ladarius Tabb added 10. West also had 14 rebounds.

Alabama A&M won its third consecutive game after losing eight straight. Arkansas Pine Bluff dropped its fifth in a row.

Marcel Mosley and JoVaughn Love Arkansas scored 11 points each for the Golden Lions (3-14, 0-3).

Southern def Jackson State 60-52

JACKSON, Miss. — Trelun Banks scored 16 points, and Adrian Rodgers added 15 and eight rebounds to lead Southern past Jackson State 60-52 in a Southwest Conference game on Monday night.

Jackson State’s Pierre Crawford tied the game at 34 on a layup with 11 minutes remaining, but Rodgers scored five-straight during a 10-2 run that gave Southern (6-12, 3-1) a 44-36 advantage with 7:31 left.

Javeres Brent made a 3 to pull Jackson State (4-13, 2-2) within four, 47-43, with four minutes remaining. Banks then converted a three-point play and the Tigers went 1 of 5 from the field over the next three-plus minutes as Southern extended its lead 58-47 with 28 seconds to play.

Raeford Worsham had 15 points and eight rebounds for Jackson State, which shot 34. 6 percent from the field and made just 11 of 20 free throws. Southern was 20 of 30 from the stripe.

Alcorn State def Grambling State 72-70

GRAMBLING, La. — LeAntwan Luckett scored 21 points — including a free throw with three seconds left for a two point lead — and Alcorn State outlasted Grambling State 72-70 on Monday.

Luckett made 1 of 2 from the line, and then grabbed the offensive rebound off his miss to preserve the win.

After Alcorn’s George Thomas missed the front end of a one-and-one, Grambling’s Chase Cormierwas fouled with 4.2 seconds left and made both to draw the Tigers within one.

Alcorn State (3-13, 2-2) raced out after intermission and built an 11-point lead just 4 1/2 minutes into the second. A’Torri Shine’s 3-pointer cut Grambling’s deficit to eight with 9:45 left and Carl Lowe’s 3 made it a three-point game with eight seconds left.

Alcorn State led 32-29 at the break. Thomas finished with 10 points and seven boards.

Shine led Grambling State (2-12, 0-4) with 21 points and Cormier scored 12.
