Lady Pirates Hold Off Bethune-Cookman For Win

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Hampton University women’s basketball team withstood a pair of second-half runs from Bethune-Cookman on Saturday afternoon at the Moore Gymnasium, holding on for the 61-54 win.

The Lady Pirates (6-9, 2-0 MEAC) have won three of their last four games and picked up their 51st straight win over a MEAC opponent.

Sophomore guard Malia Tate-DeFreitas led the Lady Pirates with 20 points – 14 of which came in the second half – recording her 10th 20-point performance of the season. Senior guards Kyani White and Kenia Cole each added nine points.

Cole also tied her career highs in rebounds and assists with eight each. Both were team highs.

The Lady Pirates will head to Tallahassee, Fla. on Monday to take on Florida A&M at 6 p.m.

Second Half Drought Dooms DSU in MEAC Opener, Falls 64-56 at Home to Morgan StateDOVER, Del.– Fresh off a season-long seven-game road swing, the Delaware State women’s basketball team (1-11, 0-1 MEAC) returned home for the first time since Nov. 24 only to fall 64-56 to the Morgan State Bears (4-11, 1-2 MEAC), in what was the Lady Hornets’ first MEAC test of the season.

With this loss, DSU dropped its eighth in a row, while the Lady Bears picked up their first conference victory of the season.

Delaware State, on the other hand, featured Amber Bogard matching a career-high in points with a team-high 21 on 9-for-14 (.642) shooting, whereas fellow frontcourt mate Tierra Hawkins tallied her team-leading fourth double-double of the season with 13 points (6-of-7) and 11 rebounds.

Coming up, the Columbia Blue & Red will continue conference action this Monday evening (5 p.m.) at Howard. Last season, the two squads split the season series with both teams winning at home.

NCCU Overcomes 13-Point Deficit To Beat SC State In Overtime

DURHAM, N.C. – With energy-filled fans in support, the North Carolina Central University women’s basketball team overcame a 13-point second-half deficit to beat the South Carolina State University Lady Bulldogs in an overtime showdown, 56-54, on Saturday, Jan. 10 in McDougald-McLendon Gymnasium.

Sophomore Morgan Jones earned a career-high 21 points in Saturday’s battle against the Lady Bulldogs, while leading all scorers. Senior Racquel Davis obtained her sixth double-double of the season, with 13 points and 15 rebounds.

With four steals and seven rebounds, junior Tisha Dixon also played a pivotal part in the Lady Eagles’ defense.

The Lady Eagles will return to the court in another Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference contest against Savannah State University on Monday, Jan. 12 in McDougald-McLendon Gymnasium in Durham, North Carolina.

Lawrence Sparks NSU Past FAMU, 68-50

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Sophomore guard Koryn Lawrence scored a career-high 23 points to lead three Norfolk State players in double figures, and the Spartans pulled away in the second half for a 68-50 MEAC victory over Florida A&M on Saturday afternoon at the Al Lawson Center.

Lawrence was an efficient 10-of-13 from the floor and 3-of-3 from the free-throw line and also grabbed a career-high eight rebounds for the Spartans (3-11, 2-1 MEAC), who snapped their six-game losing streak. Senior guard Rae Corbo added 15 points and seven rebounds, and freshman forward Kayla Roberts tallied her third double-double with 14 points and a career-high tying 17 rebounds.

The Spartans continue their Florida road trip with a 5:30 p.m. game Monday at Bethune-Cookman.

Women’s Basketball Earns First MEAC Win

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Not only did the Lady Tigers garner their first Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) win of the season on Saturday, but they beat North Carolina A&T State for the first time since joining the conference in the 2011-12 season, and 12th year head coach Cedric Baker earned his first coaching win against the Aggies.

Tiyonda Davis tied her season-high record and led all scorers with 16 points. She recorded seven rebounds and shot 66.7 percent from the floor on the night.

Kalu finished in double-digits (12 points) for the 12th time this year. She continues to lead the Lady Tigers with 17.3 points per game. SSU point guard Bria Dorsey led the field in rebounds, corralling a season-high 12. She tacked on seven points of her own in the scoring stats.

Savannah State continues the four game, MEAC road swing against North Carolina Central on Monday. Tip-off in Durham is set for 6 p.m.
