Bethune-Cookman is quickly moving forward to secure a head coach just days after Brian Jenkins left for Alabama State, and reportedly have targeted Southern head coach Dawson Odums among several choices.
Odums, who just completed his second full season at Southern leading the Jaguars to a second straight SWAC championship game appearance, will be vying for the vacant B-CU position along with UCF running backs coach Danny Barrett and Miami-Ohio running backs coach Autry Denson.
After Jenkins officially accepted Alabama State’s offer, Thompson said the school would position itself to possibly name a new head coach within 72 hours.
“Our timetable is now,” said Thompson. “We intend to continue to excel in recruiting and to capitalize on the momentum of winning three consecutive MEAC crowns. B-CU Football is a highly-respected program with a standard of winning conference championships. Our next head coach will accept these expectations and implement a plan to surpass those accomplishments.”
Odums has a 22-13 career record at Southern, including two SWAC West titles and 2013 SWAC championship after taking over for Stump Mitchell, who was fired during the 2012 season.
Odums was an assistant at B-CU from 2008 to 2010.
He led Southern to a 9-4 record this season.
He is from South Carolina and has Bethune ties so I’m sure they are going to make a run at him. For all his success at Southern, he is still dealing with a bunch of issues that haven’t hit the public square.
