Alcorn State Cruises Past Louisiana-Monroe 62-53

Texas def. SOUTHERN, 80-42

AUSTIN, Texas – Southern University Lady Jaguars (1-5) fell 80-42 to No.3 ranked Texas Longhorns (7-0) Monday afternoon at the Erwin Center.  Southern’s leading scorer, Britney Washington had to sit out this game and Kendra Coleman stepped up and played 35 minutes. She led the team with 17 points on 5-of-20 shooting and knocking down 5 out of 6 free throws. As a team, the Lady Jaguars shot 29.2 percent from the field, 23.1 percent from the three-point range and 78.6 percent from the charity stripe. Senior forward Nneka Enemkpali scored 18 points and pulled down 13 rebounds in 20 minutes to led the way for the Longhorns.  This marks her 23rd career double-double. Southern University will hit the court again as they face Pac-12 member, University of Arizona on December 11 at 7 p.m. in Tucson, AZ.

ALCORN def. Louisiana-Monroe, 62-53

Lorman, Miss. – After four Lady Braves scored in double digits, Alcorn State topped University of Louisiana-Monroe 62-53, Monday night during their first win of the 2014-15 season.  Jazmine Strane and Olivia Brown both led ALCN, scoring 13 points.  Norianna Haynes followed with 11 points and snatching four rebounds, three assists and two steals.  Jasmine Cunningham chipped in 10 points and a game-best four steals.  There was back and forth action between both teams, with the score being tied numerous times in the first half.  The Warhawks ended the first half being up by two, 26-24.  With 6:32 remaining in the second half, the Lady Braves took a seven point lead. At the 3:42 mark Alcorn State found themselves up by 11 points, the biggest lead of the entire game.  ALCN would never look back and went on to win the game by nine points. Sharnice Brooks led ULM with 12 points and eight rebounds. As a team, the Lady Braves shot 42.9 percent from the field, 44.4 percent from the three-point range and 76.2 from the free throw line.  Alcorn State will be back in action December 16 as they travel to East Lansing, Michigan to take on Michigan State at 7 p.m.
