Maryland Eastern Shore falls on the road to Virginia Tech

BLACKSBURG, Va. – After scoring 75 points in their season opener against Georgetown, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Women’s Basketball Team was unable to duplicate the same performance as they fell to Virginia Tech, 63-41, inside the Cassell Coliseum.

With the loss, the Lady Hawks dropped to 0-2 on the season while the Hokies improved to 1-1 overall.

UMES was held to 24-percent on the day (13-of-54) and could not find any rhythm beyond the arc, shooting eight-percent (2-of-24). Alexis Udoji recorded her second consecutive double-double by tallying team highs in points (15) and rebounds (12).

Virginia Tech was led by Taijah Campbell and Rachel Camp. Both Hokies recorded double-doubles as Campbell posted a team-high 15 points and 10 boards while Camp tallied 12 points and 10 rebounds in the victory.

UMES returns to the hardwood Thursday  to take on Virginia Commonwealth. The contest is the Lady Hawks’ home opener. Tip-off is slated for 6:00 p.m.

Lady Pirates drop season opener to Northwestern

EVANSTON, Ill. – Sophomore guard Malia Tate-DeFreitas recorded her first career double-double on Sunday at Welsh-Ryan Arena, but the Hampton University women’s basketball team struggled on offense in a 62-36 loss to Northwestern.

The Lady Pirates (0-1) shot just 14.1 percent (10-for-71) from the floor.

Tate-DeFreitas led all scorers with 23 points and grabbed a career-high 10 rebounds. She hit seven of her 27 shots, went 3-for-10 from 3-point range, and was a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line.

Redshirt junior forward Brielle Ward grabbed eight rebounds.

The Lady Pirates out-rebounded Northwestern 48-45 and forced the Wildcats into 18 turnovers – resulting in 15 points.

Nia Coffey led Northwestern with 17 points and 12 rebounds.

The Lady Pirates will be in Hamden, Conn. on Tuesday to take on Quinnipiac at 5 p.m.

Coppin State falls in opener to N.C. State

RALEIGH, N.C. – Three Coppin State University players reached double figures in during its season-opening 81-61 setback to North Carolina State at Reynolds Coliseum Sunday afternoon.

Janelle Lane and Jordan Swails led the Eagles with 16 points each while guard Amber Griffin tied her career-high with 12 points. Swails also tied her career-high scoring total. For Lane, it was her eighth career game reaching double figures in scoring.

Tanaysa Henderson had nine points off the bench for the Eagles and Keena Samuels added a career-best eight points.

Griffin recorded her 200th career assist during the game.

Leading N.C. State was Miah Spencer (20 points) and Carlee Schuhmacher (19 points, 11 rebounds).

Coppin State returns to action Wednesday night when it visits UMBC beginning at 7:00 p.m.

Bethune-Cookman Struggles Offensively in Loss to Florida Atlantic

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Slow offensive starts in each half proved to make the difference for Bethune-Cookman women’s basketball in its home opener, Sunday afternoon at Richard V. Moore Gymnasium. Despite three players scoring in double figures, the Lady Wildcats were outpaced by Florida Atlantic to an 88-61 loss.

Showing more tenacity in attacking the basket than in the opener at Stetson, redshirt senior Terrenisha Hollis led the Lady Wildcats in scoring and on the glass, logging 18 points and seven (7) rebounds. Freshman guard Emily Williams came off the bench to tie Hollis on the boards with seven (7) of her own. Kendra Cooper sparked B-CU in the second half, finishing the night with 15 points. Lee was the third Lady Wildcat to reach double figures, putting up 12. Point guard Jasmine Knowles scored eight (8) while also dishing out a team-leading six (6) assists.

For the Owls, Morgan Robinson led five FAU players in double figures with 18 points and nine (9) rebounds.

The Lady Wildcats have a hectic schedule coming up fast, as they next take the floor in Tallahassee at Florida State on Tuesday morning at 11 a.m., then heading to Jacksonville for a meeting with JU on Thursday and rounding out the week next Sunday at East Carolina.
